Tanami Fuel

Hello everybody,
I am planning a trip from Brisbane to the Kimberley next year and trying to work out if I need a long range tank or a heap of jerry cans for the Tanami track section. It looks like it will be about 700k between fuel outlets. I will be driving a 07 diesel Hilux towing a Vacationer camper trailer which weighs about 850kg.
If anybody has a similar rig and has done some long trips on similar roads I would love to hear what fuel consumption figures you had.
Also anything else you can tell me about the Kimberleys would be great.
My next challenge will be deciding which tyres to put on the car and trailer for the trip.

I'd check out THIS link ... she lives there and send out updated information regularly via newsletter. Maybe send her an email or contact WA Tourism ... although I'm sure someone here can assist with info as well.

Yep fantastic guide, up to date with phone numbers what to see what not to see etc. Well worth buying the full version IMO. As for the Tanami we only tipped in 2 jerry cans of diesel into the GU towing a camper across. Weighing about 4 tonne all up. Take you time and enjoy it there is no need to rush!

I agree with Madcow. You should be right, take your time. We do have a long-range tank and I reckon they are a good idea. I would rather have that than the need for jerry cans, each to their own but with the Canning on the cards next year I'll need it. With Rabbit flat now closed you just have to take advantage of the last stations out of Alice rather than wait till the half way mark (sort of) and then also fuel up at the end. We had friends go through a Month ago and it was in great nick.

Lets us know when the times gets closer and we can also give you a few tips as we live up here. We also have good contacts into the communities and surrounds (stations) as the mob I work for support I supply all the telecomm needs up here and the wife runs the visitors centre.

I did the Tanami in July with a diesel Pajero towing a Cub camper. I filled up in Alice with 90 litres in the tank and 40 in jerries, then topped up at Timouth Well Roadhouse. I then made Hall's Creek (including the 40km trip in and out of Wolfe Creek Crater) with about 15 litres to spare. Cheers.

Once again I am really grateful for all the info, I think I am getting obsessed with planning this trip.
Is there a preferred tyre that people use on these roads? I am thinking of going with the cooper st maxx.

Yeah I have just paid for the full version, looks like great value for money. Thanks for your reply in regards to fuel consumption, this will give me something to work on.

Another thing I should have asked is it advisable to fit shockies to my Vacation Camper trailer? it is leaf sprung.
Any opinions will be welcome.
