hello all campers,

We are planning a trip after christmas to or aroung thredbo diggings, i was after some information about the area and things to do. I have a 2 yearold and the oldest is 12 so would like to camp near an area that will offer something for everyone, including cooling off in water. if anyone can help and or has been around theses areas at this time of year please let me know.

thanks Dan

We are in the area for xmas most years, have a look at the trip report from last year, http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=19066.msg293749#msg293749

We go over the back of the mountain, a few more campsites and a great river which we spend hours in and on. Lots to do and see

Stacks to see and do in the Snowies, one of my fave places!
Thredbo chairlift, walk to the Top of Australia
Lake Jindabyne, fishing, sailing etc
Guthega power station and the old Snowy Scheme ghost town of Island Bend (another good camp ground)
Bushwalking around Thredbo, Perisher etc
Good Schnapps (and lunch) at the Wild Brumby distillery :)

Dan - I agree with Garrick - there are better spots in Kosciuszko, IMO.

Popular opinion is that Ravine, Tom Groggin and Geehi are the top picks (though many other good ones too!)

Down at TOm Groggin - advantages include lowish altitude (perhaps 600m?) so less temp extremes. There's the Murray to play in. Short-ish drive to Hydro visitors centre for the kids, Thredbo for chairlift/bushwalks/aquatic centre/toboggan, and Mt Pinnibar across the Murray, for low range fun.

But it's all good up in Kosciuszko NP.

Tom Groggin and Geehi. I'd be going there this Xmas if I had my way with the family.

We are camping at Blowering Dam near Tumut for a week from the 15th of Jan. this area of the Snowys has plenty to offer. All the suggestions above are crackers.

Dan it's a great area so stick with your plan. To me it's like second home.

The water is cold, even mid summer, so don't expect long lazy swims. More like a refreshing quick dip :-)

If u want 4wd excursions I know a gr8 place in the lower Snowy River that is awesome as a day trip.

As others have posted, plenty to do in the area. Be prepared to put your 2yo in a back pack and go and explore. A refreshing walk over the top of Thredbo offers awesome views even if u don't go all the way to Koz. And that's just one of the walks.

All in all, Jindy & Thredders are a bit sleepy out of the ski season. Take a breath and enjoy it. I know a bloke who lives and breathes the place year round and am envious that he gets to do this. Nothing like the snowies.

You've got me thinking....... Maybe I need to head there over Xmas.......

GeeTee

...yeah I'm thinking the same thing... sit on the deck at Thredbo Alpine Hotel and say aaaahhh

Do t forget antihistamine if you have hay fever sufferers. The pollen up there can be a killer in the hot months.
My alternative to cheap import trailers;

We have spent many of the last years at thredbo digging camp site in a tent. It's been good. We have had 2 Xmas days snowed on in the last 5 years at this spot :). That's always fun.

The diggins camp ground is ok for a CT. but not great. For the tents. They can get on the lower area and is much nicer. It gets busy post Boxing Day. That's when we leave

Tip. The indoor pool at thredbo village has a good waterside about $5 an adult. Makes a Nice treat. The snowy river is cold. Even on a hot day. Numb legs.. Per Xmas the people who camp are generally very friendly. Ad many. Like us go back each year. S that's ways nice. They have watched my boys get bigger. To the point. Last year. WE shared birthday cake with them for my son

We had a small copperhead try and sleep with us one year. Which was fun.

Lots of nice walks in the area. We are still debating if we go this year. But now we have the ct. not sure. :) (and have moved to Melbourne. It's a bit more of a trip than it was form Sydney)

The cooler weather the last couple of years has been good with the flies. But it can be bad when warm.  It's also not cheap. Unless you are from NSW and can justify a parks pass. (Or the 5 day pass. Which gives you a free night)
