I would trade Epirb for a Satphone anyday . If either dont work your stuffed but at least with a phoine you can order a pizza . Then the dude can drive you back

I agree.   We are planning a big trip around Oz, and instead of a Sat Phone that is super expensive, we are getting a Blue Tick Next G phone with a car kit and external aerial and carrying a Personal Locator Beacon.  The PLB only cost $425.  The Next G phone will give us phone and internet access in enough places to be able to contact family back home often enough, and the PLB will give us peace of mind that if we have a genuine emergency we can get help.  Much cheaper than a Sat Phone.

To contact & leave a trail for those at home to follow on the computer Spot Tracker . This devise sends 1 of 3 message to a sat then back to your specified computer .From here we are & all OK to Help send in the cavliry . Cost about $200. My Sat phone is not on a plan as I simply insert my Sim into it , Telstra dont " support " this as they cant stiff you with an expencive plan . You dont want to gab on too much as the $2 + conection fee. If its time to pull out the Sat then who cares aboiut the cost . The new Epirb is supposed to make contact faster with the sat but you still dont know if its got thruogh  . Hope I never have to test anything .

I have worked on the theory the i don't know who will survive or be conscious after a crash. I have trained my wife and kids on the deployment of the plb and we have regular quizzes.

I agree with you entirely. Am still interested in thoughts on where the grab bag, and/or PLB should be located.
