I use one of these, http://www.fiskars.com.au/products/gardening/axes/splitting-axe-xxl-x27-1015644

Split tonnes of timber with it every year and it is the best I have used. A bit expensive but quality is not cheap

I use a fiskars also , good stuff.

See quite a few of the Chinese hydraulic wood splitters at work, mostly broken ones. Build and material quality is very ordinary at best. To be fair, to build a decent one with all new components would cost many times what these can be had for.

Many years ago i had one on a 20" bar, advantages was that it lasted longer but the early ones like I had tended to lose a tip or two easily. Expensive and finding someone to retip and edge was difficult. I believe the modern version has the T/C not only on the top tip but down over the front edge of cutting tip so,may work better.
I worked out I was better of taking out upto 4 or more sharpened chains and regularly swap over at the first time the chain shows signs of struggling, saving the chain from a need for a deep grind resharpen. I would then take back to the shed the used chains to bench sharpen. If needed I might just chuck the hand file over chain in field if required.

Thanks for the info. There is a local saw doc advertising a sharpening service for the tungsten chains and that was the first I'd ever heard of them. I usually do what you said and have 3 chains in a rotation.

Little test run today. When it's not as warm I'll take the tandem out and cut a full days worth of wood for the wench

So less than 12 months after having the electric motor on my saw bench "fixed" it has burnt out... So now I am back to making the decision to replace the electric motor or fit up a petrol motor (or plan C being put a PTO shaft on it and run it off my tractor). Pain in the politician that the $300 I spent on the motor last year didn't last 12 months.

Got 5 loads of these through the week.

This was some of it.

Split and stacked it all today.

I'll leave it to dry until next year now. About 10-12 metres so a good start for next year.

Had this happen to the trailer.

They were ordinary tyres when I bought the trailer 7years ago.

Now got a new set of LT tyres on it now.

Better make the most of the firewood while you can, if the greenies get their way the " great forest national park" will take care of that in a very large part of Victoria. There is a rally against it on the steps of parliament house on Wednesday

Too much wind of late and another morning spent cutting and splitting. At least we have a good supply for a few years.

Dont know if anyone is interested but i got a 12inch bar today and a tungsten chain for my ms180 should cut real nice

I am very disappointed. After over 20 years of service I have had my first break down. Oil cap has split and broken off the safety chain. Luckily I have a couple of spare saws. Off to stihl tomorrow to get a new one.

We've been stocking up for winter. Before we were locked down I started nibbling away at an oak that was felled by mistake. Somehow the bloke that did the job mixed up a healthy oak with a near dead diseased ash seen in the background. Anyway, I went back to it last weekend. Logs are split on site and seasoned under our caravan for a couple of years then transported home and stacked in the log store ready for winter. Mrs Dandy does the stacking as she has mild OCD and gets the quivers when I do it.
