Finished the 3rd firewood shed today somehow getting the roof and wall screwed on between rain showers. All 3 sit along and below the northern fenceline where the sun don't shine but the constant breezes help to dry out the splits for next winter.

Looks awesome mate. If you add 2 stroke oil to the older wood it will burn more efficiently

Actually I coat the newer kindling in it and it makes great fire lighters if you rub 2 of them together really fast.
I tried 4 stroke oil but it burns too quickly.

I'm impressed with the shed set up and wood stacked in it, but geez it just makes me glad I don't live down there thinking about the weather that requires it be done. I prefer my fires be more for ambiance then heating....lol

Each shed is 2.4mx2.4mx1.5mhigh, plus there's the single carport on the back fence if needed. As you know this winter is still going and we've probably burnt the equivalent of 2 of these wood sheds full. Normally only one per season.

Looks really good, but I must confess, I'm more impressed with the veggie gardens.

your welcome. The 3 wood sheds used to be vegie gardens also but the fence cuts out most of the sun so had trouble getting things to grow.

we've also got gas ducted, but it heats the whole house through the ducting which is a waste given we only live in about 1/2 of it. We put the wood fire in as we have pretty good access to free wood, and much nicer ambience inside in winter with a wood fire. I also have an outdoor fire pit for family gatherings once I lift the bird bath out.

After reading all this and looking at different chainsaws, I was in two minds, get the old Stihl 009 rebuilt/repaired or buy new. After speaking to the Stihl dealer down the road, we went with refurbish and modify the 009. Its problems were, leaking lots of chain lube and difficult starting.
They found one crankshaft seal torn=no compression, no start. The chain lube thingy has been modified and now works properly. Price, under $200.

According to the Stihl dealers, the nearest you would get to a 009 would cost me about $750+.

I had my dad's old 009 and it was a great saw, I had very similar issues which I got fixed. Then some low-life got into my shed and knicked it and a brand new Honda brushcutter (looking for motorbikes). With the insurance money I upgraded to an MS291 and then later went and bought a MS170. The 009 was a very versatile saw, I am still spewing 3 years later about losing it.

Here's an idea other people might be able to use. Solves 2 problems of life for me. (2 of many)

After a session of splitting firewood for home, I end up with a barrow load or 2 of bark and small chunks/splinters of wood.

In winter, once we get our woodfire going, we only really put the big splits on for warmth and trying to burn the small stuff tends to make a mess inside. Plus after 3 or 4 sessions of splitting wood we end up with more kindling that we'd ever need.
I was going to just burn it all in the firepit but given we go camping every now and then, I tried to find a way that I could bag all the small stuff up and burn as kindling to start the campfire.

The solution came when I had to do some landscaping repairs at home and ended up with 1/2 dozen empty bags of sand&cement. These bags are heavy duty, don't matter if they get a bit wet, are strong enough to hold wood splinters etc.

If I slice the top of the bag neatly, they're easy to fold the top back over and seal up with a bit of duct tape.

Like this I can throw them in the back of the Navara tub, up on the roof rack, or on the rack on the Trackie.

We also discovered at the last camp that these are just the right size to lay in the flat pack fire pits and you can use the paper bag as the fire lighter to get the wood going. (Adding a small amount of diesel tipped on the paper also helps if a bit damp).

If anyone around Melbourne wants some made up, drop me up some empty bags and a roll of duct tape and they're all yours.

We are about to start clearing some of the logs laying around on our property. We estimate approx 70-80 tonne!

Id like to say I am doing it myself but I have a gent coming with an excavator with all sorts of attachments to grab, cut, split and a log truck to take most of it away. He is leaving us 15 tonne cut and split though.

Ill try and grab some pics when they are there harvesting it.

We pop up there ourselves with the chainsaw and grab a log or two when we get time but for the most part there is just too much and some of it is on a slope making it harder to handle.

Heres some pics of one of the small stands and an old satellite pic showing the piles of logs on the ground ready to cut and split.

Over the winter months, our Brigade will be running several fire wood raffles as we have a bit of a shopping list of things we would like for the Brigade like a Thermal Imaging Camera .. the list is quite big
