House extension or Camper/Van under carport
« on: May 04, 2014, 11:46:07 AM »
A strange one for myswag but interested in your thoughts.

We have just bought a new place.  Three bedrooms/two living/two bath/two garage.

We 'DID' have just have the three coming with us which is fine as two always share and the kids are never in their rooms except for sleeping. Otherwise they are in the living rooms or outside.

However, much to mums delight, our uni son will be coming up as well.  Not a biggie as I am happy to add a fourth bedroom to the place and there is an area where that can go (will post a drawing) but this got me to thinking.

I am almost fifty and the four year old will not be leaving home I imagine until I am at least sixty five so the house will have kids there.  But, lots of family and friends who retire end up with four bedroom houses and only one bedroom being used with one as a guest room and the others stinking of old people smell.

Sooooo, would it make more sense to carport the area where the bedroom was going to to go and where a large, dare I say it, caravan lives.  Say a Jayco extenda or similar.  This gives the oldest one their own 'flat' so to speak with a small kitchen, living area to study and to be self contained somewhat.

About three times a year we commandeer it to go away and they move into our room while we are away.

The oldest is easy to get along with so either option would suit.

Your thoughts?

Are you sure you will live there forever?  If not the bedroom should add value to your house when you sell it.  We decided not to extend and our 27 & 25 year olds are still with us.  We probably made the wrong decision :-[

Here are some basic pics of the options. The house has modern skillion roofs so whichever way we go will not be a cheap option as it will match the profile.

I wouldn't extend, that just invites them to stay at home longer, in fact I would be commandeering one of the existing rooms as a bar, have the 3 existing kids sleep on blow up beds in the other bedroom, that way they will want to move out quicker. Imagine the money you will save.

When your all sitting down over dinner one evening just say, times are tough and due to economical changes,  that you have made a decision and decided that one of the kids has to go. Ask them to work out who and walk away. I did this and the look you will get is priceless.

Last year we did major renovations and part of these Reno’s was adding 2 bedrooms, Shower/Toilet/TV area downstairs for the kids to use when they got older.

Downside is it will probably mean they will be living at home forever. Upside is they have area which means they can have some privacy with their friends.  Only time will tell, but our take is we would prefer they do whatever they do in the safety of their own home instead of a park or a stranger’s house.

At the moment one of those bedrooms get used for when I come home drunk or when my wife decides to have  a good old snore.

Have you thought about a shipping container for the eldest? Gold if they give you the sh1ts - wait until they're asleep, lock it up (from the outside), load it up and frieght it to where-ever.  ;D

And when they finally leave - great storage.

I can catagorically state that having a child move out of home in no way saves money, at least for the first few years :)

mate of mine worked on that theory, let the boyfriend move in while the daughter was 15... talk about handing her up on a platter.  ****ed in the head if you ask me..
Yep she got up the duff within a few mths, abortion, and again less than a year later, and again... kept that one, and now 3 lives are rooted. Hes a deadShit who wont work but sits home on drugs, and she cant work as shes lazy.. no hope for the kids.

I have 2 girls still at home, 23 and 20, both at uni and working part time.
We are in the process of renovating / updating a few things.
Have bought a place in the bush as well to use as a base.
Once the time us right, the girls can take over the bills and pay rent, as we are moving out.
OR, we sell up and they move out and find their own path.

Dont want this thread to turn into a tirade of older child angst but dont do the caravan thing, it will be rooted, unless your son is one of 0.5% of uni student who actually clean up after themselves. Things you take for granted as in the most basic items like Milo or Bread, beer and other day to day items will disappear into the black hole that is the caravan. Been there, done that with our 19yo. The turning point was him getting a full time job.

Unless of course he pays for it, then by crikey, you're golden.
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.
