I just don't know!
« on: May 14, 2013, 07:54:48 PM »
Today I thought I'd get all clever and bought a baintech outlet panel with volt and ammeter built in, it was perfect cause I wanted to monitor the power being put into the system from my solar panels etc so I moved the CT into the battery area and ran the positive through the CT to monitor the input current input and turned it all on and it went FIZZZZZZ and went blank, the CT is rated at 50amp and it says it can handle 30v so I am buggered if I know why it died!

I have checked and double checked the wiring and there is no problem there but i can't think of any other reason it died, it could be a faulty display or CT but has anyone got any other ideas?? I'm really lost!

most current shunts go in the negative line in my experience.

Not sure about the baintech thing though...
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

OK, I'll ask.  In my shorthand CT = Camper Trailer.  What are you referring to?

CT = Current transformer, yeah sorry I can understand that being here :-P

And CT on the neg you say, never thought of that but I'm near 100% sure it was on the pos

Oh, OK.  I've also only heard of a shunt going on the negative but I am certainly no expert.  Somebody more knowledgeable will jump in soon  ;D

Ok no idea how the baintech works but for voltage readings, you measure between the positive and negative (or power and earth) while current is measured on the power line. Connect the voltage measurement incorrectly will cause terminal damage. Blew a multimeter up doing that once lots of smoke ;D

Admit it! You we're scared to go in the electrical forum. I know I am. :)
