Hi Swaggers,
The Nymboida Canoe Centre needs your help, Swaggers that attended the National Meet back in September will know the local energy supplier was forced to restrict the flow of water down the Goolang Creek which has effected the centre as well as those further down stream that rely on the flow from the Hydro Electric Power Station, there are many reasons for this and there is a solution to fix this.
Please read through the below link and sign the online petition to help these guys out.
Nymboida Hydro Powerstation Re-opening Petition (http://nymboida.net/)
Thanks for you time, it would be a shame to lose this world class venue.
Cheers guys.

Long story short,
over many years a crack had appeared in the wall/head, management of the different power companies that controlled the plant choose not to do any thing about it in the name of saving costs.
With the 3 floods in six weekend in January last year they had to release water to prevent more damage, in doing so this made the structure weak and it was deemed unsafe and so was closed as a hydro generation plant, water that trickles from the plant now is for environment purposes only.
Essential Energy claim it would cost to much refurbish the plant to get it back up and running.
It has been proposed that the Hydro plant meets criteria that would allow for a "Green Loan" to fix the problem and once again produce 'Green Power'
And of cause it has been a political football as well.
I've probably missed something, but that is the nuts & bolts of it.

Just a silly question, if the water is not going through the turbines, where is it going? Must go somewhere.
The water that would otherwise power the turbines is fed from the Nymboida River. The flow from the river to the turbines is controlled depending on the flow in the river. At present the flow is turned to pretty well nothing and stays in the Nymboida River
Done! That was a great spot :D
Our bit done too

We were thinking of heading down there for the Anzac Day weekend. :(
Hey Paul,
it's still a great camp spot even without the water flow.
Use it as a base to explore the Clarence Valley, Platypus Flats, The Cod Hole and The Junction.
It's a short drive over to Buccarumbi, some good swimming holes over there, even in the Nymboida river down the road.
Just because there isn't a flow, don't let that put you off visiting the area mate.
If you would like some maps of tracks and day trips around the area, give us shout I can organize something.

2 more names added.
Too nice a place and too good a facility to let it go.

I hope they get the Green loan I would like to be able to buy green power instead of being robbed by the big companies >:D >:(
Ruddy would've fixed it then give us all a $700 grant to camp there.
Hi Guy,
Sorry it's been awhile since I've posted.
I read last week in a local rag that there is a push to reopen the power-station for power generation, which will mean that the Canoe Centre will get more flow as will farmers down stream.
Federal/state and local government have been putting pressure on essential Energy to spend the $$$$ and bring this facility back on line.
Not only for the health of the creek, but for the viability of all that rely on the flow.
I will try and keep you informed of any developments that occur.
Cheers for the update Hairs, the canoe centre owners would have their fingers crossed something happens soon.

Some great news I heard today,
Things are looking up for the Canoe Centre, money has been spent and there looks like this will keep their doors open (http://www.hairfysh.com/images/Icons/Smileys/thumbs%20up.gif)
The flow is nowhere near what it use to be, but they are working on fixing this also.
So if you have heard or were told that they were closed, this isn't the case.
This is a great facility for stop overs, long weekends and for hold big meets, as many of you found out last year for our national.
So if you are traveling up & down the East Coast, drop on by and say g'day to the Kris and his family and spend a night or two there.
Cheers Kris for contacting me and informing us of how things are going.
Look forward to hearing & seeing the flow restored.
BTW, many thanks to all those that signed the petition, cheers guys,
Your support is appreciated.

Hi All
the canoe centre is still running and needing as much help as they can get.
the work on the creek is now finished and there are some good places to swim. there is still no word on what is happening with the power station. so flow in the creek is still low, but enough to keep the water holes clean for swimmers.
cheers guy
kris
Thanks heaps for the update kris.
Hope to see ya's soon.
