New generator oil

hi all,

just organised a new generator for Dad... a Yamaha 6.3kVA inverter generator...

just sorting out oil... in the book it says 10W-30 or 10W-40... looks like the 40 is for a bit higher temperatures, which is probably right for where we are (Mackay)...

i can only get the 10w-30 in town... would that be OK to start with?

generator won't be used that often, more for blackout protection.  will be run every other month for a about 30 minutes to keep it ticking over...

so, 10W-30 will be OK?  it is specified in the manual as the default choice.

You went for a quality geni and you can't find the time to swing by a supercheap or bursons?
The 40 becomes important if running for days under high load in hot conditions ie.. what you bought it for.
It will only be 400 -600ml.

I'm asking whether there is much of a difference between the two...

Thought it better to ask for some advice...

I haven't bought the oil yet... generator takes 1.3L to fill...

Thanks for that... that is similar to other articles I have read on the topic...

Might go with the 10w-30 for now... easier and cheaper to get locally...

Does your old man have mechanical sympathy or set and forget.
My old man got me to get him 2 Honda's linked by a cord for same purpose,  only gets serviced when I visit.
Run the 10w30 and if at the first oil change it looks the same as the new oil going in then the engine isn't stressed.
I run syn 5w30 in 2 4wds and small car and 5w40 in a wakeboard boat under constant heavy load.
Consensus seems to be it doesn't matter.

His health dictates that he won't be able to service it  himself regularly...

I have found a local supplier of Penrite 10w40, which also fits the required spec (API SE or higher, which I know is obsolete... current spec is SP, which the Penrite oil fulfills...)

I might be overthinking, but I just want to get on the right footing straight away...

i use penrite in my cars... so, will go for their 10w-40...

We used Penrite in every 4 stroke we have/had.

Boats, cars, motorbikes.... the works.

Lucas Oil Products make excellent additives as well.

If going with Penrite, I'd look at using HPR 5 - 5W40, although it has API SP approval, it also has MB 229.5 approval which is an excellent oil spec (far better then SP on its own)

Not sure if it's applicable to the Yamaha but with the Honda I bought an attachment that goes into the oil filler and extends it making draining the oil a much less messy affair.

   The generator I bought is messy to drain, oil goes everywhere. An Oil syringe totally fixed the problem.

It will be fine. I currently have a Yamaha EF2000is. I saw the WEN 56200i on hot deals recently https://houseandbeyond.org/best-generators/ the first one and couldn't pass it up for the price. I could have bought two of these and had change for what I paid for the Yamaha. The reason that I purchased the WEN is that the engine is a Yamaha clone, it's very similar inside, and the wiring diagrams are virtually the same so that I believe I can parallel the two generators. It's made in China, but the Yamaha has a label inside that it's made in China also. Smarter tools also has the Yamaha engine but they lablel theirs "Powered By Yamaha". I don't know if WEN licenses this engine or if it's a knockoff. I'm betting that both units might be made side by side in the same Chinese factory.
