I wanted to bring some knitting with me on our current trip but I wasn't sure about how best to make it so that I could easily knit from the centre of a ball and at the same time not have it rolling around the floor, grass, etc whilst also keeping it untangled and clean ...

Enter the Jalna wool/yarn pot ...

Makings:
Jalna 1kg yoghurt pot (any flavour/variety yoghurt will do but seeing as how you'll probably want to eat it you should choose a flavour/variety you like)
10-12mm drill bit
Grommet to fit 10-12mm hole

1.  Eat yoghurt and wash/dry container (and remove label if you don't want anyone to know which flavour yoghurt you ate)  ...
2.  Drill 10-12mm hole close to the centre of the yoghurt pot lid
3.  Trim hole and insert 10-12mm grommet

This pot works well with balls of yarn up to 50g - for larger/heavier balls you could try a Jalna 2kg yoghurt bucket (but be warned - you'll need to eat a lot of yoghurt!).

Bonus with the 1kg pot is that the shape of the neck is great for winding any excess yarn from when you start a new ball or for those frustrating times when you have to pull out a whole lot of rows (eg, Aran pattern, three types of cable stitch over a combination of 4, 6 and 24 rows) ...

Wife will love this one! Even I know from watching her all this time that it's a simple but effective idea.
