So I know that I can't just pull in to any council park or picnic area and camp overnight, but I'm finding it hard to find good information on what the rules are, or where to find free overnight stops.
Is there a good webpage with this information?
We plan on setting out on fairly aimless trips and finding spots to stay along the way - but I don't want to spend hours looking for one, I can't deal with that anxiety every day!

Webpages are old school....   ;D ;D

WikiCamps app  is pretty good.

Aircamps is another app you can use.  Havnt tried it myself.

Yep WikiCamps is the way to go. We use to use the 'Camps' books but now only WikiCamps.  One off payment to download the app. Heaps of info on there, you can look at camping spots Australia wide and read what others have said about a spot and most of the time people have uploaded a photo or photos of the camp.  Also you can see dump points and again comments about each one, not to mention where to get water from.  Kevin

The more info you get, the closer to a decision you can be.

Here's one I just found out about yesterday: https://opencampingmap.org/index.html.en#10/-28.0694/152.7069/0/0/bef

Based on Open Street Maps so very much still a work in progress, but shows you where lots of spots are (although sometimes they don't even have a name listed!)

Thought there was a sticky on the top of the camping thread here? 🤔

So long as you have tried your best, you should have no regrets.

Whoa, very sorry for the delay in response!
Thanks for all the info! I burned my 'free trial' of the wiki camps app by starting it, immediately forgetting and not opening it again for several weeks. Whoops.

Thanks for the tips! I'll check out the websites people have suggested.

I have just come back from a trip out to western Queensland, and I found Wiki Camps quite good, I did buy my version of it though. It is that cheap I just brought it before trying. It gave me images, distance and feedback of possible camps as I went, and out there, I had no phone coverage to update as we travelled.
