Plastic Jerry Cans

Does anyone know the difference between the plastic jerry cans used for unleaded and those used for diesel. Can they be used for either one?

Just different colour plastic.

Apart from the colour , nothing .

Its actually standard UN [united nations] colour coding for hazardous [liquid] materials , yellow = diesel , red = petrol , green = 2 stroke petrol , blue = water , ,,,, problem being Australia has no enforceable system for compliance...


If you carried diesel, premix or unleaded in the red ones the emergency services will treat them as if they were all petrol .

I have old black ones and they have had both petrol and diesel in them. They must be 25+ years old and I still use one to keep the mower fuel in. They all appear in good condition.

They have lived both in the back of a covered ute tray, and on the front of the camper trailer where they are exposed to the sun. The only thing I do is to ensure nothing rubs on them which seems to have worked ok.

Yep I have 3 or 4 black ones the same as Traveller around the same age, one got a hole in it around 5 years ago from pushing up against barbed wire, just put some marine sika on the hole held diesel or petrol every sense, Craig

l use black plastic jerries for diesel , best to get the units that have 2 fill caps . So much easier to pour  as they breath better .
