Hi All, Righto you blokes that live up at Cairns and the Tableland way, Whats about the earliest they let 4wds up the Cape road to Weipa towing vans and boats without a permit, Was thinking of going up to Weipa at the end of April or early May. Do you think the wet will be over by then and the road right to go, As Going up to Pennnefather,  Thanks Craig

Unfortunately I cant predict the weather . Pissing down in Cairns at the Moment and will be for the next week. Late April/early May I reckon you should be right to get to Weipa however 1 decent storm might see you sitting around for a few days.

As Big fish said, its all depending on the wet, I actually have a facebook site "To the Cape York tip and back", and my current info is showing the water is 1.2 over the Archer River. As a rule of thumb I base my trips on being able to cover most of the Cape from mid May.  Keep in mind that lakefield doesn't usually open till late May, and Bathurst Heads generally sometime in june, they have had a good wet so far this year, I hope this helps.
Stay safe and play fair.

Thanks Dicko and Tony, Yes the Archer would be the one river that would stop you, at that time of the year,  My mates sometimes have to camp on the Archer river for a couple of nights to let it go down, As they go up to work on there house at Weipa for a week or so then go out to penny for two months. Will see what happen over the next 7 to 8 weeks, Craig

Thanks Tony and Dicko for that, Theres no pressure gents if its going to be a bit longer wet season this year I will go up a couple of weeks later, but as you blokes know once it stops raining up there it does not take long to dry out and the creeks soon drop,Craig

The Mulligan Hwy is open at the Little Anan and Mcleod rivers, Rifle Creek is open. On the PDR,  the Laura River is open, but the PDR remains closed from Laura to Coen.
Stay safe and play fair.

Might have to put this one on hold for a little bit longer now mate. ;)

If it cuts across this the east after making landfall there will be a real mess up there.

in 2006 we visited The Cape not long after cyclone Monica ripped through there, the destruction to the trees at Chili Beach was a sight to see.....other travellers were saying that area was closed, but we drove in and it had just been opened by the Rangers, the piles of trees stacked up that the Rangers had cleared from the road in showed how busy they had been, a huge effort on their behalf. Was as busy year for cyclones in 2006, the destruction around Innisvale from cyclone Larry was still very evident as we passed through there, massive palm trees on the main highway that had the tops snapped off them stick in my memory bank for instance.
