Buying 2nd hand 4wd
« on: December 06, 2015, 05:04:23 PM »
G'day all, I have been towing me camper trailer around with my commodore and was going to sell it and buy a Prado. I have come to the conclusion that I just can't sell my commodore and was looking for a 2nd hand 4b. I know bugger all about 4bs but was looking at this 2002 Nissan Patrol ST plus with 200,000ks on the clock going for $18,990. I do like the look of these and theres plenty of room in them just wondering peoples thoughts on these 4bs. Thanks.

If it's the diesel, you need to google zd30.

Haven't owned one, so can't really help except...forget googling zd30. All you'll do is waste HOURS of your time, and spend $$$ on headache drugs.
That engine is known as the 'Grenade'...and for bloody good reason, cause sure as s4!t, it WILL blow up. Just trust those that have gone before  ;)
So still look at it, but back away if it's the zd30  ;)

how big is the camper, and do you really need a large 4wd? if the commodore has been doing the job, maybe a smaller suv like a santa fe or forrester may be the go?

If you really like the patrol, the CRD version of the engine post about 2006 is fine (apart from a lack of power and the universal issue with common rail diesels of killing them with dirty fuel). As Oldmate has posted, the Patrol4x4 forum is a must read.

Be VERY wary of most newish diesels with 150000klms+. Once up around this many Kay's of average driving the intake is well and truly caked with crud, Due to emissions regs, They're basically designed to clog themselves up which leads to catastrophic failure. I don't know of any which are immune from the factory. The zd30Di in the early GU patrol is renowned for it. I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole unless your prepared to fork out for a rebuild.
