Lets get some bygone days of camping photo's posted , just for the memories.

I still remember those canvas tents, wooden poles and ropes that shrunk when it rained (you had to race around and loosen them or risk major problems)   Make sure you dig a trench around the tent so water didn't flow through:'(

So much easier now

Earliest memories of camping was going to  the beach at Kingscliff and other coastal spots in the back of a VW pick up with the family fishing [ six of us all up ].... we used an old tarp held up with bush poles, strung off the side of the Vee Dub ... Luxuries included a tea chest [ thin ply box ] with the basic food supplies, a kero lantern, home made X fold pipe and canvas chairs , A home made ply folding leg table and ex army stretchers for our beds and a few old blankets, cooking was done on a small circular saw blade  over a fire ..fresh water was kept in a galvanized  milk / cream can and a jam tin on fence wire to dip it out with ..
Absolutely loved those trips to the beach ...

My husbands grandfather was dirt poor growing up, they didnt holiday in tents - He and his 10 brothers and sisters lived in tents on the common till he was about 11 when the whole family moved into a small three bed house so close to the rail line that the train used to stop, swing the water boom over and fill the tank!

My grandparents used to belong to a camping club in England before they immigrated sometime in the 60s, my nanna told me about when they got a new fancy canvas tent they has which was the 'latest thing' from Europe and how they used to set off on a trip, Nanna, Pop and two kids on the motorbike and sidecar! She never did tell me how they fit the tent or if someone else from the club took it for them.
Pop used to dig a trench around the tent and nanna used to cook on a little cooker similar to current hiking stoves and would balance one saucepan on top of another like a broiler to cook meals.

Before we had kids we used to camp in a dome tent with no matress and just a sleeping bag and pillow, an esky to keep the food and drinks cold in and all cooking was done on an open fire. We used to have one of those largish beach umbrellas that we put over the fire if it was raining so we could still cook our meals, and we just had a communal shade shelter tarp to sit under... which worked a treat as 9 times out of ten it used to rain when we went away somewhere (the neighbour across the road even used to joke to let him know when we were going camping so he could fertilize his lawn...lol), we also had one gas lantern for night time lighting duties.
would love to show pics of our set up, but we never used to have a camera so never took any pics of our earlier years of camping.
