New Scam Info
« on: June 04, 2014, 07:08:01 AM »
Hi All,
I received this email last night and thought I should pass it on............................I have no direct experience with this scam and can only pass on what information was contained in the email.

..................received a call last week from the 0809 area code.

The woman said “Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you - get back to us quickly. I have something important to tell you.”

Then she repeated a phone number beginning with0809. We did not respond. Then this week, we received the following e-mail:

Do not dial Area Codes 0809, 0284, and 0876 from the UK, U.S, Australia or Canada .......

This one is being distributed all over the U.S ..... This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this and pass it on.

They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc..

In each case, you are told to call the 0809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.
If you call from the UK, U.S, Australia or Canada, you will apparently be charged a minimum of

$2,425 per minute. And you'll also get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges.

WHY IT WORKS:

The 0809 area code is located in the Dominican Republic ......

The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam.

regards

Drenno

i was at the local cafe this morning picking up a coffee. In my line of work (in uniform) i get approached a fair bit for advice or just for a chat and i certainly dont mind helping people. I had a woman approach me and she went on to say that she had received an email regarding money that was owing to her and that they have asked for all her personal details to confirm that it was her. She then said that this included drivers licence, passport number, dob etc etc etc.. I said straight away that it is a scam and to delete the email. I then asked whether she was going to reply and i was dumbfounded when she said yes. certianly made it clear to her that it is a scam and that she must not respond and to let her friends also know. she seemed quite shocked that someone would do this.. i went on to explain scams in easy to understand terms and I told her that I receive emails telling me i have won millions, lost track of how much, and they are all scams.

I have never experienced first hand someone being so naive regarding scams and i could not believe that there are people out there that would reply expecting money.... anyway, i hope i did my deed for the day and that she took my advice...

Regards

Scott

Did you get a donut with your coffee? How many people have approached you and asked "do you eat donuts?" I must average one a week whilst in uniform.

Also not new - but along the same lines as above - when I was a bank branch manager (I can hear you sniggering already !! ) a few years ago - I had a bloke in who wanted to do an overseas transfer to a women he was "In Love" with.  When my staff asked how they met and he said they hadn't so they referred him to me.

Poor bugger was convinced his new love was just experiencing some immigration issues and was desperately trying to get this sorted so she could buy her ticket to come and visit - just needed some $$'s to sort out the issue.   $10,000 in fact...

Again like Scott I warned him that it was a scam but he still wanted to send the money as apparently I didn't understand how much she loved him??

I refused to allow my staff to do the transaction and he blew up threatening all sorts of consequences.  I still refused - but love is blind - he went into another branch and asked for cash later that day.  Off to find a Western Union or similar I suspect...   Biblical quote - a fool and his money will always be parted.
Vacation Camper & McTavish surfboard - what more does a guy need??
