National Parks in Queensland

Camp fire discussion on Saturday was about having to book in advance to camp in Qld NP. Book on the net and only stay the time that you booked,is this correct?
How can a traveller manage this if no service is available and travelling on a loose timetable.
Surely this can't be right.

yeah its a bitch at times........if you are close by than it OK but if you are touring the length of the state and you end up ahead or behind schedule it becomes a pain

I had to change my dates for moreton island.......my fault at time of booking and it was straight forward to have it changed over the phone......

i.e. i'm going to double island this weekend, I will book tomorrow and all will be good as its just a weekend.......

You can ring 13parksq I think it is to book a site or drop into any Qld Parks office to book also.

In one way I see it a good thing. You get a the spot you booked etc. also helps with the Parks people to track usage of the camp grounds.

Have you ever tried to book into the Cape Range National Park (Exmouth WA) camp ground during the busy season! But at least in WA they have camp ground hosts to manage the grounds and they are extremely helpful.  Kevin

The online booking system is good and bad. The good part is with the camping grounds with numbered sites, so can book your favourite spot months in advance which might have water views, good shade or close to amenities and know you can arrive late afternoon and drive straight into the best spot in the grounds.

Down side is when booking the best spot in the area weeks or months ahead and the weather turns bad just before your due to depart, then you either have to camp in crap weather or forfeit your money. With the pre numbered sites if you hold off booking until the last minute, then you have to take what’s left and normally it’s the rubbish sites.

Also depends on which park it is. A lot of them will only require online booking and pre payment for public holidays and school holidays, with self registration on arrival for the rest of the times.

I was at Sundown a couple of weeks ago, they still do. Porcupine Gorge did the last time I was there.

Admittedly, these are all quite isolated though.

I agree though, the online / phone system is a complete P.I.T.A. unless you know exactly where and when you will be somewhere.

I called into Blackdown Tableland once, used the phone from the registration stand and was told the campsite was full, even though it was 5pm and the place was deserted ? whoever it is in Canberra / Melbourne / Delhi that answers the phone has NFI if a spot is available, but what are our options ?

last time i was at the Northern section they didn't have any envelopes for self registration, the old registration hut was still there but nothing for registering in, we had booked online though so it wasn't an issue for us.

they must have just been out of envelopes when we went there then, i assumed they had stopped stocking them and relied on people pre-booking sites

Without doubt the worst system we encountered on our trip around Oz. No problems anywhere else but QLD  National Parks were bloody awful for travellers like us. In the end we avoided them wherever we could
And the worst part was that at some spots like Lawn Hill, you could rock up, there would be sites available, but the Rangers wouldn't even let you book them even though you didn't have internet access 
Lets hope the rest of Oz doesn't go the same way

Eliot Falls at the Cape must be booked otherwise you miss out.

The problem is that there is no phone contact and the ranger turns up now and then to check.

The benefit is you know that you have a dedicated spot to camp and as its been like that for a number of years there should not be a problem.

We have grabbed every spot for camper trailers for this years Cape Trip. Booked them all on Boxing Day last year as you can only book 6 months in advance.

JK is not on the trip so we have duggie with chainsaw and hockey mask, that should do the trick.

QLD NP pinched a weeks worth of my dough when the first cyclone this year came down past Rockhampton. We were booked into Erimbula but because we had booked it 13 only days prior its tough luck. No refunds no credits. The booking service is outsourced so you're not speaking to a ranger or even an employee of of NP. The guy on the phone said they get a heap of complaints with the system but nothing they can do about it.
