Burke & Wills Swag - Retro fit to make self standing?
« on: May 06, 2014, 09:01:34 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Keen to hear from anyone who has retro fitted a Burke & Wills swag to make it self standing. I see a number of swags now that have poles running up the middle holding the hoops up. I am keen to make something like this, similar to the ARB swag i have attached below.

Any idea's out there?

They just use spreader poles.
It  will be how the poles attach to the hoops that's the trick.

We have just purchased a kulkyne swag and it is just like a spreader pole through the middle the poles at either end have lips that keep the swag attached and the spreader just clips onto these poles and has a piece of Velcro at the middle.

Not in the one we have it is more like a smaller in diameter tent pole the type that has the springs inside to pull apart and fold down into 3 hope that makes sense not sure if you could get a good enough photo of kulkyne web site to see what I mean

Thanks. Might have to look at a way i can attach to the hoops or insert a eyelet so i can hook the spreader bar up some how.

Which Burke & Wills swag do you have, this may assist in understanding how to make it work?

We have 3 B&W Simpson swags in the family, these stand quite happily with minimal tie downs.

In fact I throw mine onto a stretcher, as I get older the extra bit of comfort is enjoyed ;D

I do this new world thing called work, leave in the dark, get home in the dark, and find said business is closed, hence the phone you speak of does not work. Please be kind enough not to be sarcastic, and understand everyone has different circumstances and reasons to the methods they communicate. Cheers.

Go and have a talk to your local canvas person they may have some good ideas and you will also get an idea of cost. You may find that after paying for a set of poles and paying to have some sewing done it might not be much more to just buy a new swag depending on what you want

The Kulkyne swags are imported so I suspect they are not made from Aussie canvas but then again who knows, I suggest you ask Kulkyne; they were very helpful when we bought ours. 2 years on were partly living in ours as we travel.

Back to topic, show us a pic of the B&W swag and something can always be jiggered up.

Can you  get a spreader pole with a spike each end?
That'll do to hold the main part.
Use shock cord as a small loop to go under hoop and back on the spike.
Spreader pole is anchored to the hoops.
Measure up the distance between the foot end and the middle loop.
Measure your tent poles and when you find the one that's longer in the spike end.
Flatten the end and make it into a U shape.  So the U drops onto the hoop.
The U shape sits over the hoop and held  in place by shock cord.
The spike end fits to the middle loop just like your first pole down the middle line of the swag top.
That'd do it, I reckon.

There must be lot's of other ways.
