x3 ,when you have friends who work in the industry , it hit's home how easy it is to have this happen thru no fault of their own.

My thoughts go out to the family.

Having recently joined the mining industry this hits close to home. Doesn't matter how "safely" you mine there is always the chance something will go wrong, we are dealing with nature after all.

So sad. I knew by the sheer number of sirens last night that something terrible had happened, but after hearing that the miners were trapped and that rescuers were working to get them out,
I went to bed thinking there'd be a happier outcome this morning instead.

Such an unfortunate accident, and my thoughts go out to their families and friends as well.

Seeing reports coming through that it was an outburst in a development panel.  They wouldn't have seen it coming and had no chance of getting out of the way.

Names have been released - http://www.news.com.au/national/two-miners-killed-after-wall-collapse-at-austar-coal-mine-in-paxton/story-fncynjr2-1226885760777

Thoughts are with their families, very sad day.

This is very sad news, reminds all of us not in the industry how dangerous mining is, I think sometimes we mistakenly just take it for granted that miners have a pretty easy job for a pretty big pay packet, but it is very dangerous.

Symon, for someone who isn't in the industry what do you mean when you say "an outburst in a distribution panel"?  Is that something to do with the electrical supply to the mine shaft?

We were hearing all about at work last night.

It's not good and under ground is a safer work place than above ground too.  Thought go out to the families.

Don't complain! It could be worse, you could be six foot under or a brick of ashes!!

Outburst in a development panel.

A development panel is where the roadways are made.  A coal outburst is when the gas build up in the coal seam is suddenly released in a violent way throwing gas, coal and dust everywhere.

Usually an outburst is from gas pressure, but sometimes it's from weak structure and just plain pressure ( weight )..

Austar wasn't known for outbursts, so this tragedy was certainly out of character.....and one where you would hope they didn't know what hit them...not a pretty sight to see someone trapped.....

And during our minutes silence yesterday before work, I for one certainly thought of the pain their workmates and family are going through !!
