Question for Cub owners .....??????
« on: April 14, 2014, 09:13:38 PM »
Can some one with a cub camper please tell me the brand of the winch that they install on them. I'm thinking of installing a winch on my 96 Kamparoo, and would like to see if I can source a genuine article. I like the "automatic" winches that I have seen on them, and they don't seem as deadly as the common ratchet pawl type available at BCF and supacheap etc. (Although Cub have been helpful in the past , their after sales prices can be shocking)

Cheers Chippy :D

I spoke to cub about fitting a winch to my 2001 kamperoo, and the advised against it. Gentleman said the floor was not rigid enough and I was likely to bend it. I notice that some people have fitted a winch to similar vintage cubs ok, just something to keep in mind.

That is interesting. We considered installing a winch on our 1997 Cub and after reading this think that we have made the right choice in deciding not to.

interesting comment from Cub, however I plan to raise the whole floor (including the base) as one piece. Raising the base should stop it from bending.

Chippy, welcome to the lovely after sales service from Cub. If it's any consolation, you are not alone.
Getting back to your floor suggestion. Are you aware at all, of what material the floor is constructed of, and the thickness of that material ?
I'd respectfully suggest you explore this issue well before trying to alter anything, as in my humble experience, the floor is ply wood and if it's any thicker then an eight of an inch, I reckon you'll be lucky.
On our Cub, they manufactured a frame resembling a roof rack which was cross bars across it, this stops the floor from twisting out of square, though does not stop it from cracking underfoot. That's why I caution any work before you establish how strong the flooring it'self is.

The hard top is fibreglass with a steel base ... Mine dies not twist or flex a great deal . As a chippy I have considered a few options and increasing the gas strut rate and raising/ lowering the whole floor is the best idea.

Cheers chippy :)

WOW, ours is plywood coated with a fiberglass skin (which has separated in places) with a external steel frame over the top. When you say steel base, do you mean sheet steel, or a steel frame covered with wood ?
I've even considered an aluminium sheet shaped to fit to replace the whole lot. No flex with that, nor separation and bullet proof to boot.

Chippy
The Pacific Hoists are really good. I have recently upgraded ours to a 'silent winch' and you'll find my item about it if you search this site.
I'm really surprised to read comments about people receiving poor service from Cub. My experience is exactly the opposite. If I  need any parts, or any advice, I just phone or email Lisa Welsh in the office at Cub. She puts me through to the person who can provide the best advice, or organises parts I might need and has them couriered asap. One time when we were passing through Sydney, I phoned Cub in advance and she and Ross had a few parts I needed ready in the office when I called in at the Cub factory. She even arranged for a service technician to come up to reception and to talk me through how to replace the rear support bar on our Supermatic.
From my experience they are very nice, helpful people who give really great service.
Hang in there and give them a go.
Cheers
