swags......
« on: April 12, 2014, 08:17:00 AM »

Hey guys,
Was having a debate the other day at work about swag types...... basically traditional vs dome swags...... My argument was that it doesn't matter what type you roll with as long as you are getting out there and going bush, that's all that matters.....

But in any case it would be good test the waters here and get peoples opinions and pros and cons on both types?????

I used a traitional type swag for years and my pet hate was mosquitos on the face. (yes I know there are types of screens). Then I bought a dome swag and I will never go back. Only personal preferece but up here it makes it so much more comfortable. Oh... and a few rums before bed helps.

I prefer dome swags but it is a bit of a challenge crawling through the front head first and then trying to turn around once you hit the end. It only happens after a few bevies around the camp fire which is probably every trip away with the swag.

I've only ever had the flat swag, got this type originally because it could be used anywhere...... rolled out inside the house for a mate to use, used inside a tent and it doesn't take up much more room than a sleeping bag etc.......... however if I was using a swag purely for sleeping outside in the scrub I would be going with the best quality dome type I could buy.
Reason being,
1- Peace of mind to keep the bities out, besides the obvious snakes etc, most parts of Aus do have some nasty kreepy krawlies that  can ruin a trip away.
2- Keep the canvas off your body, meaning on hot nights etc u can sleep with nothing touching u, ie; sheet, blanket canvas...
3- Being able to roll over without upsetting the canvas covering you, also being able to roll over without all the noise canvas makes.
4- If it rains plenty through the night and ur in a flat swag, rain is going to find it's way in, unless u have somehow managed to be sleeping with the canvas perfectly positioned for drainage.
5-And for me (being a big unit) u need a lot of canvas to go over me and allow enough to make up the extra to keep rain dew etc away from the mattress.
6 Sleeping in a flat swag I mostly wake up with the canvas thrown off and me pretty much lying flat with nothing between me and the sky except maybe the shirt I'm wearing or sheet blanket, and if it's a damp night or heavy dew this is normally wet.

Buy a dome swag.  ;D

Or for the best of both worlds, buy a good flat swag, and one of those swag/cot/stretcher thingos....... that way if u just want to kick the swag out flat, u still can...... if u want to go the full enclosure u can do that too.

I have a traditional/wanderer style single swag for me, it has apex holes so I can throw a pole on 1 or both ends, that keeps the canvas off me and allows for some good air flow in the heat.....

I roll with a king double dome when its me and mrs out bush.......

Buy once, buy for life. Get a Southern Cross Canvas Dome swag. I have tried most name brands, spend up too 100 nights a year in them and these are by far the best made. Made in Aus, using WCT canvas.
They cost a fortune BUT they also last. My Southern Cross is in better nick now after 6 years of use than some of my others were after two when used in similar conditions.

Some of my staff are trialling the cheap Kalkyne copies, however they are not lasting. I can see these being replaced with Southern Cross versions before they have had two years of use.

The dream would be a southern cross swag, however it will have to wait as they are quite $$$$ like you said, and until the kids are a bit older it would not be getting the use that it deserves.....

I have a Burke & Wills Coolabah (dome), probably the next best down from Southern Cross. Made in AU with AU canvas. Took me a few trips to work out how to get in it efficiently, I was getting in via the end rather than the top. It is great for my limited used and will last a lifetime.

I bought a dome swag for all of the reasons above.
However, half the time I cant be stuffed and just use it like a traditional swag (no poles) so have the best of both worlds   ;D
Getting there if half the fun

Themissus and I have been living in a kulkyne queen dome on and off since hitting the road last June. We bought it mid 2012 for a five week cape trip. So far we've replaced the mattress with HD foam from Clarke rubber and have found one bit of stitching holding the mozzie mesh in has come undone. Fortunately it's at the top where it stays covered by the canvas.

Were happy with it.

X10 for buying a quality swag and having it for life, I bought a Candy Canvas traditional swag 13 years ago and it is as good as new, I had to re water proof it a few years ago as the canvas was starting to weep when wet, but did it once and it has been fine since. The quality of workmanship is first rate, I like the traditional style and usually sleep with the canvas over my face and all zipped up, especially good in the cold. It has a built in mesh mozzie screen and has a fair bit of slack in the top with an eye so you can tie the head end up to a tree or car when raining to let the water run off properly.

We bought our eldest a cheapish Chinese swag, it lasted only six months before it all fell apart, never again..

We bought the ARB double swag last year at the show and so far can't complain. Our daughter uses it whenever she comes with us in the camper trailer as its a hard floor and she complains about the lack of room inside the camper (complains about most things really) so the swag gets a lot of use. Very happy with it and the quality seems very good, heaps of room inside and plenty of ventilation. I rate it. Price is up there however but worth it.

I wish! With ours being a queen size, it doesn't work with a stretcher :-[

I have a couple and my son has one as well.

My old one (on the right) only had a single smallish hoop at the head end.
My son's is similar but with a hoop at the foot as well.

I found that in hotter weather mine got too hot and stuffy. So I got another one with 3 bigger hoops on it (far right).  Much better!

Cheers

Are flat swags better say inside a camper trailer tent and dome ones for outside?
Sorry to hyjack thread, looking at getting kids swags for inside tent and thought of getting flat swags or could I get dome ones and not have to set up the dome section when inside?
Regards

I use a flat type. I always sleep under the car or truck. Keeps that winter dew off. :)
