From someone who has experience high category cyclones, my thoughts are with you all.  Please all stay safe.  A cat 5 is not the time to be getting on the fizz, save it for All Clear when you've cleaned you place up.

Pretty intense system now, the next 24 hours are not going to be fun for those in the north.

Stay safe.

Looks like they'll be hit hard in Hope Vale. Wouldn't like to be at Eddie's place there at Elim Beach during a storm surge.

Stay safe everyone.

The Cape has escaped the damage but Cooktown will cop a battering.

Not a chance .. do you know how tough QLD'ers are .. the road will be open in know time .. Even back in the day the peninsular was never shut for a whole season.. Someone will get through , then someone will follow..

I thought I would be bunker ed down by now , so I made a big pot of spaghetti and meat balls at lunch time , and cooked up a pack of sausages so we had snacks .. Well we are still sitting around waiting so the missus just cooked up a sponge cake , lol ..

Well stay safe folks ,

Cheers

We evac'd Newell Beach & headed 2 Port Douglas. Sitting outside on the balcony. Not 2 much rain but the breeze is just now starting 2 ramp up. If it stays like this we'll be happy. Hope Cooktown is faring well.

with a river height of 9.2m there at Bairds Crossing things would indeed be bloody interesting ..

Hows the blow going up there on the hill TOPNDR ?????

at 03:00 I had a tree top take out the power to the house , now have live wires in front yard ...
the wind keeps climbing slowly , with a few sticks and small branches flying around ..

I thought we might have had a bit more by this stage , but not complaining at all , don't mind if the light comes before the worst of it ,lol..

cheers

Well the blow has certainly reached us now. To be honest I wasn't expecting it for another few hours. Heard a tree come down somewhere nearby. It was all in slow motion over about 15 seconds, creaking, groaning, snapping then bang! And one hell of a thud. Probably one of the big old giants coming down in the rainforest.

Daylight here, it's raining buckets and howling wind at the moment. So far so good, we still have electricity.
Watching the live footage from Pt Douglas on TV. Not sure why it is blowing a lot more at my place than it is at Port Douglas as Port is 60km closer to the cyclone than us. Hopefully we will stay lucky, I have two large bushes uprooted so far but that it.

A long night of waiting , managed to get about 2hrs sleep before a tree cane down onto the power supply line , giving the place a good shake .. conditions deteriorated from there ..The worst was around 07:30 ,, its dropped back to gusts and squalls now.. plenty trees down..

The Daintree is now At 15.19m at Bairds crossing ... coming into record territory..

cheers

Can the flood affect you and your property if it gets higher.
We had 76mm of rain till 9am, and it is still raining but not a lot of wind here.

We are flooded in at Goldsborough.  The bridge went under a couple of hours ago. Went up to our friends place for a couple of hours drinking beer.
The rain is still coming down heavy, we have had 170mm since 4am this morning and 125mm from yesterday so  295mm in 20 hours.
A few branches down here and a few shrubs uprooted.
The wind will be a lot worse in a few hours, no doubt with all this rain trees will be coming down and we will lose power.
We have a 3.5 KVA genie and 100 lts of fuel in jerry cans so we will cope OK.

How are you other FNQ members going?

Raining off and on. The wind has slowed but the cat 1 cyclone is still north of us at Port. The wind may pick up later in the day.

We've been for a little recce around Kuranda.  Lots of leaf litter and smaller branches down.  Cascading rivers of water around the place. Large pine across power lines on Fallon Rd.  Our power went out at 0830 and came back on at 1200. Had to cut a neighbour's roll up/down clear blinds down as they were flailing in the wind (neighbour OS on sea cruise).

From the wind direction (northerly), I'd say the eye is to the west of Kuranda, so a few more hours of heavy winds I'd guess.

I'm supposed to go to work tomorrow at the airport but at present Kuranda, Gillies & Julatten Range Roads are all closed.

Just been rainy here up the back of Edmonton, if no one had mentioned it, I wouldn't even know there was a cyclone around.
Few little stiff gusts now as I type, but nothing more than a normal rain sh!tty day.
