This will Make Things Interesting for The Cape
« on: April 06, 2014, 04:32:03 PM »

Interesting times coming up for the Cape with a cyclone formed well out from the Qld coast.

It's hard to say where it will land if it does but if it hits north of Lockhart River the crossings on the OTL will be full of water and a lot of trees and vegetation down.

A Cat 3 cyclone will dump a lot of rain up there and will make for some interesting crossings.

Is this a bit late in the season for a cyclone?

Interesting Cyclone Monica hit the Cape on April 19th 2006. It was a Cat 3 and did a lot of damage up the Cape. We ventured up in September that year and it was like a ghost town everywhere. They had reports that the roads were closed but they weren't but a lot of the roads were washed away.

What worries me is what it is going to do to our Easter plans, the current forecast shows it coming around the back of us going south.

Cyclone  Ita is predicted to cross the coast near where Cyclone Mahina crossed in 1899.  This was Australia's deadliest cyclone killing over 400 people.  It created a huge storm surge that wiped out the Pearl lugging fleet that was taking shelter there.

Those whom have travelled up the Cape to Bathurst Bay will be familiar with the large grave stone memorial.

This scenario would not be good, 190klm winds as the cyclone heads along the coast.

This is just one scenario as BOM has it heading across the Cape.

The next few days will give clearer indication.

Better get the genny ready and the beer  ;D

Not looking good a cat 5 coming in.

They are still unsure which track it will take as yet but moving in a southwest direction.

We will cop some strong winds and around 200 to 300mm of rain.

I think I will need more beer

Interesting when Yasi hit the JTWC information was more accurate than BOM. So working on that we could see 300klm plus winds as it comes in.
