Lawn Hill National Park

A question for those who have been there! How long could (or should) one stay at Lawn Hill National Park to have a good and relaxing experience. At this time it would appear that Adels Grove would be the most likely base in June July ish. I would assume that booking would be essential to ensure a camp spot consequently the question. We don't want to over or under-do the stay.
Any advice or comments appreciated.

We stayed at Adels grove in late Oct 2012 for 3 nights and found it to be a quite relaxing spot and next time we head back that way we will be planing on easily a weeks stay and we stayed in the Grove (the top camp ground was closed off) heaps of room.

We went there in 2010 for 3 nights had a ball was just the right amount of time for us

We stayed at Adels Grove and really enjoyed it
Our stay was only for 3nights but could have stayed longer.

The million dollar question.

I would suggest 4 days depending on what you want to do. A day canoeing Lawn Hill, a day exploring Riversleigh Fossil Fields and a day or 2 to relax in between.

The big question.......................how much longer Sol?  ;D We enjoy relaxing IF the environment is nice.
Seriously, thanks for the replies. We have regretted not staying longer in a few places we have been recently (and regretted even going to a few also). The camping environment is important and having NO idea what to expect at Lawn Hill we would like to get it right. Reading between the lines 5-6 nights would appear to allow relaxation and exploration. Am I correct in the assumption that booking is essential?

I'd recon 3 nights as a minimum, and if you want to have a reasonable look around, add a day for chilin, and another day to go back to the falls just to make sure.

The camp ground at Adel's is pretty big, and is not designated sites (set up where you like). It was late July when we were there and there was plenty of room, doubt that you will need to book, but if you know when you are arriving, it can't hurt.

It's about a 15min drive to the gorge from Adel's Grove, and the camp ground at the National Park has limited sites with basic facilities, and I'd recommend booking if you wanted to camp there. But my choice would be Adel's Grove. The facilities are much nicer, and there is a bar and restaurant if you feel like treating yourself to a night out.

There is no TV, Internet, or Mobile reception at Adel's Grove (the bar staff are very appreciative if you give them a recent newspaper  ;D), but there is a hill about half way between Adel's Grove and the Nat Park where you can get mobile reception if you poke your tongue the right direction.

as Mark has said, 4 days is easy to kill off there, especially if you do a walk or 2 at Lawn Hill also. From memory we did the Indarri Falls walk with our kids (which i'd recommend doing, but not in the middle of the day), there's little shade on the return walk a top the escarpment so be prepared with plenty of water for the walk back (we went clockwise), we didn't have any water left for that and all got badly dehydrated (we were there in September). i'd love to go back and do a few of the longer walks and canoe up the gorge, things we didn't have time to do on our brief visit there.

We stayed 3 nights at Adels Grove, we were there late July and we didn't book. You could book for 3/4 nights and then extend your stay if you wanted. Beaut place, we are staying at the National Park this time, late July :)

You will see a sign as you come in towards Adels Grove before the bridge that says Private property on the left. Take the track up the hill and drive past the first spot where you can park to another spot further up. There you have mobile coverage  with Optus and Telstra as they use the signal from the mine nearby. Walk around and you will get a signal. Plus a great spot for drinks and watching the sunset.

Was up there sept 2010 with rusty as he said 3 nights was good I think 4 would be better so much to have a look at ,But on the other hand I have reason to go back as I think it is one of my favorite camp spots ,and to be truthful I cant wait to get back up that way have a great trip  :cheers: ehsc

As said, 3 or 4 days BUT if you are depending on solar, I would make sure I had a sunny site!

We too weren't sure how long to stay,
so we have booked and paid for 3 nights and then if we need more time we will extend our stay then.
3 months to go yahoo

We stayed 4 nights at Adels Grove in July/Aug 2012, we camped up the top, not as many trees for shade but less people & you can put up the annexe, plus hook up to water as well. We didn't book & there were heaps of spots available up top, but it was pretty crowded down the bottom in the shady area, too many people for us plus we had two dogs. Easy drive to Lawn Hill to explore, theres also a cool billabong just before Adels Grove locals told us about, had the spot to ourselves for an afternoon. Theres also a good campspot heading out from Adels through Riversleigh, thinks its on the Gregory River from memory & I think you have to book here though, but it looked great, we didn't have time unfortunately

We stayed one night at Adels and 3 nights in the gorge campsite. I prefeered the gorge to camp as there were less people and i liked the fact there was no need to drive anywhere.

We stayed 4 nights at the National Park in Sept 2012.  The camp sites were big enough for a big shade tarp and the amenities block was clean and functional.  We got to see most of the stuff, walking tracks, canoes etc. and did plenty of swimming at both the park and up at Adele's Grove.  We had dinner up at Adele's Grove one night (make sure you book!) and visited more than once for ice creams!  Lovely place.  The kids probably enjoyed the swimming area at Adele's Grove better than the NP.  We had a night at Riversleigh on the way there from Mt Isa and then a couple of nights at Karumba afterwards too.
