Any cut throat users out there?
« on: March 12, 2014, 12:19:44 PM »

Does anyone else out there us a cut throat razor for shaving?

I always get a rash when shaving even using Proraso shaving cream and after shave stuff.  Recently I bought a cut throat that uses disposable blades and have been mighty impressed.

Being right handed I have trouble using my left hand;

Any tips or tricks?

Whats the best way to learn to limit the scars.  My modelling career is rather important to me.

I have done it once or twice go by feel then use the mirror last to tidy up

I found the mirror was causing cuts cause things are turned around when you look at your reflection

I use a DE safety razor. I found poraso irritated my skin also if I didn't take the time to use boiling hot water or straight after a shower.
There are some great YouTube videos to help but a big part is the prep and lather..

Do you mean old style DE blade type razor or the single blade Barber razor?

This type
DOVO STRAIGHT RAZOR SHAVE FULL HOLLOW GROUND BLADE Wet Shaving First Pass with Grain Cut Throat

Though mine is a cheaper one with replaceable blades.

Like this one;

Mate I use an old school double blade Merkur which is like a disposable style. The technique is the same though, you need to ensure you get the lather right (peroso is ok) and shave with the grain not against, ensure your face has just been washed to soften the whiskers & it takes plenty of practice. It also depends on what blade you use as some are more aggressive than others. I use the sharpest available so I don't have to push on my face and get a cut like yours.
In summary
1. make sure you wash your face/ have your face wet
2. use a brush and soak it in hot water for 5 minutes beforehand
3. then create the shave soap by swirling it consistently
4. swirl brush as you are applying the soap on your face
5. take your time it might need to be done 2 or 3 times

Well I am bloody well sold.  Bloody, get it.
I am now getting the best shave I have ever had and enjoy the experience.  Touch wood no cuts for weeks.  I also use it like the Japanese do holding it straight and its great.  Think I will buy one of these feather Jap jobbies;

Plus I can slaughter whales on the weekends for scientific research. MMMM scientific.
