So I saw this add on Gumtree Cairns. $14K hardfloor camper "Made In Australia"

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/mount-sheridan/camper-trailers/star-vision-off-ground-bed-camper-trailer-2013-luxury-model/1028563611

It looks very similar to this one on ebay for $9999 (auction) with a RRP of $20599.00

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7x6ft-Off-Road-Camper-Trailer-Caravan-4X4-4WD-Backward-Hard-Floor-Camper-Trailer-/251346986166?pt=AU_Caravans_RVs&hash=item3a8572a4b6&_uhb=1

It also looks very similar to the imported ones. Am I being paranoid or is this CT really made in Oz. ???

I've seen that advertised around too and think the same. Everything from china and just put together here maybe.
Don't complain! It could be worse, you could be six foot under or a brick of ashes!!

Ahh "Custom Made" bit of a clue there me thinks. ;D

All the custom parts made in aus? or maybe just assembled in aus?

Its amazing how many companies think that because they Assemble it in Australia they can claim its Australian Made.

Pretty sure its Illegal to advertise that its Australian Made when infact its not, but i could be wrong.

The other company that we no longer mention on this forum got away with it.  To get the "Made is Oz" logo you only have to prove that 51% of your product is made here.

I am just trying to find out because I despise CT Companies that say made in Oz on imported CT's.

My ex used to work for a very large textile company. They had shirts made in Fiji without buttons and sent to Oz. buttons were sewed on here and PRESTO Made in Australia.

I'm pretty sure there was some government assistance in the form of a grant or similar
available to companies doing this also.
The mob I'm thinking of done a similar thing sewing the tags on back here, there would
be a lot of people on here that'd own some of there gear under one of there names.

I think you'll find that if 50% or more of the wholesale cost of the finished product including labour is derived in Australia you can call it "made in Australia" legally. So in other words, I can import an unassembled trailer from China for $500-00, spend another $500-00 assembling and painting it, putting the tail lights etc on I can LEGALLY call it "made in Australia " I don't believe this should be the case but that's how the law is atm  >:(

Agree with Woodsie, those pics on ebay are looking very much like a SE / Central Asia, the smog sky and buildings are a dead give way......... i can almost smell fish sauce, and hear the relentless car horn beeping when i look at the pics!!  ;D

I seriously doubt it is what we would call Australian made, it is from China by the looks of it. Which I have no problem with imported Trailers or any imported product, but like you I despise misleading advertising.

The other company we are no longer allowed to mention does manufacture its trailers here and doesnt hide the fact that they use imported tents so I cant be too hard them for calling themselves Aussie made because they mostly are. I did take offence to a representative of that company trying to tell us they were 100% Australian made though.

Wow that is bad, they have made no attempt to hide anything in the picks.

I'm trying to figure out the suspension, I see on each side:
2 x shocks with the external dampener
2 x coils, 1 around each shock
1 x Air Bag.

Humm, that ort to do it

I looked at a similar suspention set up at a camping show and asked about the airbag and was told it's a coil spring with a boot around it (it was on a chinese camper)

DaveR

Ah-saw, I see now, the boot is to hide the coil when it gives way.

Does it really matter? What is your tow vehicle and where is that made?

The Aussie made thing has long ago died, most of us buy a product based on what it does and price before country of manufacture.

The OP wasn't knocking imported products he was knocking deceptive advertising and rightly so.

I agree Brutus but not all of us buy imported gear. Some people wish to keep their spending money in Australia buying goods from Australian companies or manufactures. That is their right to do so.
One thing I cant stand, in fact I HATE is companies pretending to sell something with the "Made in Australia" slogan stamped all over their product when clearly it is fully imported.

It is lying, stealing and misleading the customer under false pretenses and basically un-Australian and a low act.

For the record, My Cruza is obviously made in Japan and my CT was made in China (something that I have never hidden from other Swaggers).
Cheers Mate

Yeah this Aussie made thing is a croc.so many of us are duped into paying more for something on the premise that it's Aussie made when in fact it's not.

Brumbypt

You can tell if some steel is made in china..

I have gotten a few things cheap, look at the cast iron, it will be shinnier and rougher. possibly still silver and not red. like the front coupling.

steal like the coupling plate will chip or flake the top layer off if you try to stamp it..

have a general look at the quality of all the joints, etc.. look for cheap looking mistakes

Ummmm, I may have been guilty of sending an email reply to the Gumtree add asking which bit is Aussie made?
The response was a bit different, here it is:

"As the picture says "custom made in Australia" but it seems that yes it is only assembled in Australia.  This however has no bearing our selling the trailer.  As per the discription, it is a two person trailer to assemble with all the extras."

I sent them an email 2 days ago asking the same thing but they haven't replied to me.  I was pretty direct.

I asked "Is this Camper Trailer really made in Australia or is it made in China?"

DaveR

Strange that I got a reply then, here is what I asked:

"Hi There
Which bit is made in Australia, this Gumtree add? "

You must be a bit of a sh1t stirrer like me Dave. I just wanted them to admit that it wasn't Australian. I just sent another email. ;D
I just checked their ebay listing and the picture has changed from "custom made in Australia" to an Aussie flag pic.

DaveR

Yep, that is me, guilty your honor, but only for the same reasons as your reason to make this post in the 1st place.
They should just fess up to it, they'd be better off if they said the parts are made elsewhere, and we check each bit as we put it together with quality control bla bla.

I am trying to figure out the battery position now, is the drawer below the bed?
