Watching movies of the Internet – Difference between download & streaming??

Hi All,

I fully admit I’m not that computer savvy, so the other day when guys behind me on the bus were talking about watching movies of the Internet on pay sites and they mentioned how they stream the movie.

So what is streaming and does it still eat into your monthly download limits? Is steaming faster than say downloading a movie?

Streaming is watching it as it downloads.. You get to watch it once.

Downloading you can watch it 1290820498230498 times but download once.

both use similar amounts per download/stream.

One downside with streaming is if it stops because of "buffering". Simply, the download is playing catchup because there's a download speed difference between your computer and/or the download site and/or the good Telstra infrastructure. Really annoying.

these are all I ever use and most other people I know who want movies and ,music etc

Yea, but they are illegal and best not mentioned on a public site from my understanding. I use Netflix which is a US service and the BBC have one also. I pay 7.35 a Month for all I can watch and the kids and it's very good. Not saying I don't down load  but I'd be careful as I know they are ramping up pressure on those that do this. If you do take this path then make sure you do not seed as the rules change from those that down load to those that distribute. Run a program called 'peerblocker" and be careful.

YouTube is great for streaming tv programs. We cancelled Foxtel as all my wife's English ( yes I married a Pom) TV programs are available pretty much 3 hrs after they have been aired in the uk

Invest in a Unotelly or similar subscription so that you can designate your "location", usually US but can do UK, Canada etc depending on what you want access to. You can then subscribe to payTV services such as Netflix, Hulu & Vudu which provide cheap as access to all the tv shows and movies you could possibly want. This costs less than $120/yr and except for live sport run rings around Foxtel.

You do want to have a high or unlimited data plan but speeds don't need to be great as we usually only have between 2.5-4mb and watch these successfully.

and all are FREE, no need to pay for anything.

I use unblock_us for the IP side of it, happy to pay a small fee for a service I have no problems with.

Netflix will accept Australian credit cards, sites like Hulu plus you need to sort out a prepaid US credit card (theres numerous ways to do this online).

Foxtel pffttt.... who needs it.

Not using any of them.
Don't have time to watch tv all day. 

But, every now and then we search on youtube on the tv.
The kids love it.

If you don't have a US credit card you can buy gift cards for most of them from ebay and pay with Paypal.

I haven't signed up to "IP blocker" and have been running on trials to date. Can people recommend the freebie options they have had success with? I am running mine primarily through Xbox360.

If you use chrome then go to the link I post earlier. I changes your IP to match the country your wanting to be in
