Quarantine Check Stops
« on: August 31, 2013, 05:46:21 PM »
Hi all... I can remember quarantine stop on NT/WA border.. & expect a check on NT/SA border, but cannot recall if there is a checkpoint on QLD/NT border........... can someone enlighten me on this subject?
Also what are the chances of having to open up the O/B Dove? I guess that depends on whether the inspector has had a good day or not?

When I went through the NSW/SA and the NT/WA checks I had to open up the Goldstream Storm then repack it.  As with the QLD/NT I cant help you there, there is a good website that explains it all, but I dont have the link with me

I think they are now going to do check on the QLD/NT border crossings because of the spotted freckle found on bananas in the last week.  ;)

There is a check point at Kununurra for NT/WA and Eucla for SA/WA.
An honesty bin is on the Great Central rd just out of Laverton.
Yes they will ask to look inside at the manned checkpoints and are fairly thorough.
A good mate used to be in Eucla and I still had to have my rig checked over.

Hope that helps for WA anyways.

I got bananas from knx (kununurra) drove down to bungles and up mt Gregory and back into the NT, when I went back through the quarantine check they wanted to take my bananas off me, even though they were from knx anyway..

but the first time i went through the eucla check point, i got so nervous i even ate all the frozen peas.. hahahaha they were yummy, well the first half of the packet was..

our camper took 1.5 hours to un pack and setup, so I got worried that we would have to take all the Shit off the top and set it up to show them the fridge..

cant remember what happened but we didnt have to..

I probably told them about the peas so they trusted me..

any fruit etc that is processed will pass the check point.

Carry on...

At present there is no check point between Qld and NT. There is a checkpoint at Ceduna for those travelling east on the Nullabor.

Ummmmmm, think you'll find it's Eucla, Ceduna is about 300 odd km east of the WA/SA border.

Definitely Ceduna. Going west at Eucla they were much more thorough, had to open the Swan all the way up. Coming home at Ceduna they just wanted the door open and poked his head in.

In my travels, instructions east of Kununurra, Eucla, Renmark heading into SA, and once a mobile fruit fly man on the Tanami Track, not too far from Halls Ck.

Nothing on NT/QLD or NT/SA borders.

Renmark  going to SA asked to open the glove box , no food just the usual stuff . We asked about the taboo lie from Woolies . They had a look & told us to eat it that night . We got lumbered after buying spuds & tomato's in Mildura  on a past trip .

Is that east bound at Ceduna?

Usually it's a bolt home westbound on the blacktop. Most of my forays east are on dirt.

Thanks all, that's a great help.  Was aware of the NT/WA checkpoint.
I won't have fruit/vegies when passing those spots but will prob have when I reach Ceduna but not crossing into WA. Will return via coast to Port Lincoln then touring SA penninsulas before returning via Alice Springs/Mount Isa
Appreciate the replies

traveled through the ceduna and eucla check and neither bothered me to open the jayco up i must have looked honest when boarding the spirit of tasmania leaving melbourne i was asked three times to open the camper and unpack every thing i wasn't the most pleasant person around when i was asked the third time - and in devonport i was asked again to open and unpack everything that time i refused i suggested they either let me through or help me with reversing the ct back on the boat. so yes i think it has all to do with how the inspector is at the time

This is the best site I have found on border quarantine stations.   Takes some of the guesswork out of travelling with fruit and veg.

And the thing to consider is.. It i the law, don't bring the food in, there is no need to ruin the fruit industry of a state. So while it is a pain and we go through quite a lot. Be warned, pack accordingly and be nice, they will check and good on them. I remember a certain poster on here that thought is as fine to remove the bins just because he portrayed an indigenous life style, well trust me, they are the first to follow this rule as they do not want to loose the produce they have as well.

Cane toads are here and that sucks, lets save what is left please. Be warned and get rid of the stuff before you get to a check point.

Going into WA from NT, we handed over honey, nuts, a box of fruit and veg. They searched the car and trailer and we were more than compliant when surrendering anything they wanted. We were a little uneducated before we got there!!

If you are heading east, drop in and there are boxes and boxes of food just sitting at the 24hr checkpoint going rotten!! You may get a freebee!

I agree, hand it over as its not worth risking local agriculture.

As for drug smugglers and gun runners, take as much as you want..... there is nothing to worry about as long as you don't carry fruit! They don't care about anything else!

As it turned out we had no idea as to what was right and wrong when crossing into SA recently. The inspector was very thorough and much to my wife's disappointment he cleared out our fridge of all the containers which had all the pre cut salads.
Here I was thinking Apples were the only issue....wrong.........he took everything :( He wasnt happy with us either, he didnt fine us but suggested many others would have. Lesson learnt.

When we came back over the Nullarbor, they checked our fridge but we didn't have to open up our CT.
But they were not happy with the mud on our CT and car.
We had to use their gernie to wash it of.
I explained to them that is was from the Old Eyre Highway, wich is the same on the WA end.
Didn't matter, I still had to clean it.
That meant that I didn't have that much mud on our driveway.  ;D

No checkpoint on the QLD NT border (well wasn't around October last year)

For us driving NT to WA earlier this year I knew what we could take through and we pulled up at the last rest stop before the border checkpoint and ditched anything that wasn't - fed the kids the bananas that was left. At the checkpoint we got the all clear - as we were getting the kids out of the car in Kununurra i discovered the youngest had a mushed up bit of banana in his hand as he had fallen asleep just before the check point  (oops).

Folks were telling me last night when day  went through 1 of the to check points on the nullabore the day even had to get rid of a cardboard box because it had the word banana  and was once a banana transport box

Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Yep. When my mum passed away, we brought some of her stuff over in fruit boxes that were new (all we could source). Still had to unpack and repack into quarantine supplied boxes which were...................

....................fruit boxes.............go figure. My mate (quarantine officer, who was there) still has a chuckle over that one.....

I will have to remember that if i am going that way. Am happy to pop the top but he may not be happy climbing over the chairs & table i lay on the floor in front of the fridge. could be i have to find another spot or i will be opening the whole thing up  :(
