I have been reading with interest what fridges and eskys everyone uses and was wondering if this Post could be turned into a poll to display the totals for each fridge.  These poll results would come in very handy for anyone contemplating purchasing a new or used fridge/esky.

Similar format to the which camper poll and which 4x4 poll.  Not sure of the logistics to setting this up so I will leave it in the capable hands of the all mighty MODERATORS.

Wouldn't work real well coz a lot of us have 2 fridges. 1 in the car and 1 in the camper. I don't think the poll function is that smart.

Yep poll function is that smart, I have currently set to max 3 votes per person and we can change that as we go along, but you need to add them all up front. Once you hit Vote, yours is locked in. But you can only vote for one brand once, ie if you have two waecos, you only get one vote.

Will need to add brands as people request them though

I ticked all three. The reason is, ice chest for day trips, 40 ltre engle for over night trips and 80 ltr waeco for longer trips.

I got the ABR Sidewinder fridge. Works great. I also have engel

Troyk

I went for the 60kL evakool because they are more efficient, cheaper and aussie made. All confirmed in Choice magazine. The onlly downside that I have found is that its a bit more of ackward shape.

I also have a 82 tropical ice box, which we use for longer trips with the fridge. We vacuum pack our food, freeze it and then into the ice box with 1/3 ice and it lasts a week. Makes a good stand for the evakool at camp too.
If I had everything where would I put it.

Waeco X2. A 50lt in the troll and a 25lt in the trailer.   Rossco.

Waeco x2 here as well - 50 litre in the camper, old 35 litre behind the seat in the truck

jk

we had a trailblazer 60lt and found it to be great but it was BIG as it had the 4in insulation, sold the trailblazer and bought 2 x 40lt Engels, very happy with their current draw and reliability. sometimes we have both in the gullwing box on the camper and other times one in the camper and the other on a slide in the back of the cruiser.     i guess it comes down to each persons needs.

Had it running in our cabin at Tolmie off the solar panel for 4 years so far. Never missed a beat, and we just have it in the back of the Discovery when tavelling.

IS THERE A PROBLEM OFFICER

Matto

Currently we have the mighty IceKool icebox. But the plan is to add a 50L Waeco when funds allow. It seems to be the best size for us. The IceKool (cheapy brand of EvaKool) is great for what we use it for now though - holds block ice (2L milk containers frozen) for 4 days no worries at all, despite it being used for food and drinks, and used here in the tropics. Only thing I want to do to it is paint it white to help reflect a bit of sun's heat away - couldn't tell you if it would be worth it or not, but it seems like a good/cheap idea.

Of course, before we can get a fridge, we need the dual battery, and that means fabricating a battery holder into the rear of the car, and then if we're doing that, we might as well...  ;D

Thanks!
Matto :)

Matto, the Evakool fridge have the same compressor than the Waeco but the thermsotat nob is bullet proof and cheap to repair. The Waeco circuit board on my fridge have to be replaced twice because the board burn with spikes on the line. The reair shop in Bundaberg was full of them.
Also the Evakool invertor for use the fridge on 240 volts is om metal allowing the heat to disperse.
Before your get the Waeco (excellent box) do a bit of more research with the authorised repearers.

Hey Defensor,

I like the Evakool fridges, it's just the odd size that I wasn't too sure about. How do you go with packing around it and so forth?

And the almighty question - what are they like on price? I'm planning to pick up a factory second waeco from this mob : http://www.getawaeco.com.au/ - the F.I.L. picked up a 35L 3-way last year for under $200 simply because it had a scratch on the front of the plastic case. They were retailing here in BCF for $450 at the time, so he was pretty happy with that. I don't expect the same sort of discount myself, but would be happy paying around $750-$800.

I've got to admit though, I would much rather support a local, AUS business, and I've been more than happy with the icebox.

Food for thought!
Matto :)

The Evakool 50 lts cost the same money than tha Waeco. Shop arround and you will have a good deal.
I agree with you regarding the shape of the Evakool, it is not the best but easy to service it in case of compressor faliure.
Did you have done some research about the Bushman? (http://www.bushman.com.au/Default.htm)

Have a look this link for the Evakool prices:

We have and Evakool 60 litre. Like the idea that on a trip we can use part as a freezer. On a weekend trip just take out the divider and use as a fridge. Just have to be careful that nothing can fall around the vents on the outside of the motor.

I use 2 x 40L engels, one with a two zone. This gives me a fridge, a freezer and a crisper (two zone) for longer trips or just a single engel for short trips.

Can the Two Zone be added to the poll?
