Went to a bike shop to ask question regarding di2 and what is possible.
I knew more about it than the person who helped me, sad.
His excuse was that the was just starting in this business so wasn't "up to speed" with the technology.
Not very helpful.

Bike shops are niche these days, you need to find the right one for your type of bike/riding, and talk to the mechanics if you can as they have the most knowledge.

A lot are also chain stores with sales targets.  The store we've started going to is a family business in its 3rd generation, and the owner is madly passionate about what he does...

Could have been his first few weeks there.. nobody starts in a business and knows everything there is.. Well seems some might.

The other option is that he's a mountain biker in a shop with a road bike section - I know that's what I was when I started to work in the shops, so I had to learn pretty quick the road bike specific bits and bats.

Much better that he fessed up that he didn't know everything instead of bullshtting his way through and giving you duff information.

In town here we have one shop that is more mountain bike, the other more road bike - and the customers are pretty much split into the mountain bikers who ride road in the mtn bike shop, and the road riders who mountain bike in the road bike shop. However, I've found one shop is better at listening to what you want/need than the other, rather than telling you what they want to sell you... the classic was walking in and saying "I'm looking for an XL 29er, probably hard tail, possibly a 120mm-ish travel FS for xc riding under $2k" and being offered a large, all mountain bike for $3k... yep, really inspires me to shop there...

When I started at Sheridans bike shop in Cronulla in the 80's (jesus thinking back, was it really that long ago!), some bloke came in asking about Reynolds tubing (from memory), I had no idea... boss came over and saved the day saying we don't deal with that high end stuff. and true, we weren't a specialist shop we were just your average family bike shop.

At uni one of my housemates had a De Kerf Team SL with Reynolds 853... it was a work of art; full XTR and Pace forks...

4 more runs today at Bright. Tracks dried very quickly considering we had around 50ml of rain in 24hrs. Might do a quick cross country ride in the morning prior to pack up.

The Intense is a great bit of kit and this weekend it proved itself on some great tracks. Have to come back next time with some extra body protection and push it a bit harder

Strangely enough I have moved from my LBS who apparently needed a week's wages to service my roady last time, to a major chain (99 bikes) who have gone over and above every time - even with my online bought bike. The mechs are very up to date and love bikes. I am very happy but understand the subjectiveness or choosing stores too.

I think we're spoiled based on your experiences...

The shop I tend to use is owned by guys who have spannered on the Australian Commonwealth and Olympic games teams bikes, and have supported a couple of other decent riders (U23 Australian Road champ etc)

The other shop in town is again family owned, and their daughter was in the running for the Cycling Australia Mountain Biker of the year (Woman) award in 2018.

Even the shop I use back in the UK has a decent pedigree over the years, with a couple of guys who rode for England or Wales in the Commonwealth Games over the years.

Sounds like it Ed... The store we go to now is Omara's in Black Rock... Great people, and look after us on price and service.

About to get them to do a bike fit for me, as I'm not happy with my current for.

I was thinking it was a 30-40 minute process like the last one I had done, but nope... 4 1/2 - 5 hours

Try Stewart at http://www.riderfit.cc/ he set my Gravel bike up sweet and only took an hour or so. He has numerous options depending on what you want setup.

So I need to pick the Collectives' brain. I'm getting close to pulling the pin on my new bike and just want a bit of confirmation that I'm on the right track. Our 2 local bikes shops aren't worth dealing with as I've had bad experiences with both of them and won't spend another dollar at either.  The bike shop in Rocky(100 k's away), that we buy 99% of our race gear through, hasn't gotten back to me after I rang them with a set of wants and told them I had 2k to spend. So I turned to the net.

It's got a good spec. Nice, slack front end. Looks awesome and it's different to all the Trek, Giant blah blah blah that I see one the tracks.
It is a pretty aggressive bike but from all reports and reviews it seems to be a good all round bike.  I'm starting to really enjoy riding the tracks at our local MTB Club and I want I bike that I will grow into, not out of.

It's a bit of a franken bike but reasonable spec, there's a few of these slack hardtails getting around now. The geometry is designed to be mostly pointed down so it you ride a lot of uphills it will be a slog. Looks like a fun bike though.

I think D4D has hit it on the head, it's a bit of a "bit of this and a bit of that" bike; it'll do fast downwards trail riding, with a bit of air time, but won't necessarily climb that well.

It reminds me of things like the Azonic DS1 (my brother still has one in the shed in the UK!) and that ilk of bikes from the early 2000s - but with a bit more frame size.

I'd have a look at a Giant Fathom as well, possibly a Specialized Fathom (check the specs on both)

I ended up going down a rabbit hole - I forgot how nice really good chromoly bikes are (I have a 2000ish Kona Kiluea steel frame in the UK shed) until I had a look at Curtis Bikes in the UK's builds... they've been around for a while... don't look too closely at the prices... £4,200ish for a steel hardtail... or nudging $8k+...

Curtis also have some nice BMXs in both 20" and Cruiser...

Similar geometry to mine. The short chainstays make the front end light for climbing, and then you can ride it down stairs.

First hospital visit following an off for 12 years today... Forgot how much hitting the ground hurts when you land 100kg of rider on a 4" tree root... Just that moment of zen like peace followed by a rude awakening as you land on your right side and still have your right leg clipped in whilst the left leg is unclipped...

Bruising to the ribs, shoulder and pride, and a bit of pulled shoulder and most of the right leg muscles as i twisted my leg... Oh and a bit of skin off my forearm/elbow.

We also don't bounce like when we were young. Recovery is also slower, ask me how I know.

Turned out to be a fractured rib and sprained shoulder and leg...
