I must admit I'm liking the SRAM gear to work on. The locking pin for the rear mech is a nice touch.

Rainy day, so all bolts torqued to spec, axles and seat post greased, tubeless conversion done, now if I could only get the front brake pads to stop rubbing on the rotor...

Rode a Trek Checkpoint today... OMG - so much better than my old Giant roadie!!!

Went into the store to look at a Focus Mares, and ended up riding the Checkpoint ... They're going to let me know when they get in a Domane in my size to get the pure road equivalent...   Will take a Norco for a spin spin when I can get to the store near us that sells them

I had the same feeling when I rode the Norco Search for the first time. It's fast and looks old school from a distance but new school when you get up close. I could have bought the carbon but preferred the old school steel look.

a gravel bike is a fancy name for a cross between a cyclocross bike and a traditional touring bike.

currently they're fashionable because the industry wanted something new to sell.

an XC mountain bike... goes properly off road.

for a 4wd orientated explanation...

a gravel bike is a Subaru Outback or Forester... sure... you can take it off road, if you're really skilled and careful. But it's really better suited to dirt roads.

an XC mountain bike... is a Landcruiser, Patrol, Prado etc etc...

Hi D4D- in practice, what's the difference between a gravel bike and an XC bike.

Gravel bike rides way faster although not as capable as a XC bike. XC bike is more stable and able to traverse more technical terrain.

Ideally you want a gravel bike on the way up and a XC bike on the way down

I swapped from an XC to a Gravel bike for family/rail trail rides and longer bike packing rides. Also because it looked cool and is a talking point amongst riders

Single speed, fixie or 1x11?

Single speed for me was simplicity - my old Rapidfire Plus shifters exploded, so I went to 1x8 and then the other went so I went and locked it to one gear as a skint student back in the 2000s.

Fiixie was a pure simplicity and challenge for many people, but a lot run a flip/flop hub and use the freewheel side.

1x11 is because they're more efficient than a 3x system, and better than even a 2x10, in terms of the gear inch overlap and usability.

Thanks Ed - I should have been more specific- I did mean single gear as in one chainwheel and one rear cog. I thought it was simplicity, but I can only imagine that it's a significant compromise 😀

That's simple... for those racing, it's a "I can do this, therefore I'm better than you" and normally on a rigid bike... in town, it's simplicity and lack of maintenance needed.

That's simple... for those racing, it's a "I can do this, therefore I'm better than you" and normally on a rigid bike... in town, it's simplicity and lack of maintenance needed.

Second that when i was living in melbourne and commuting from mentone to St Kilda every day (200k a week) the single speed really comes into its own for the lack of servicing required.

I actually stripped it right down to bare riding (no computer, cadence sensors, timer etc) and it actually made me a far stronger rider when i would then get back on the road bike for the weekend beach road bash or a couple of repeats up the 1 in 20

Had a couple of drinks with the neighbour last night and he let slip he has a new bike coming. He is a sprinter/crit specialist. The frame is a Cippolini rb1k 'the one', with Enve cockpit. He is having it built up here with durace di2 because the wogs wouldn't be happy if they find him bastardising their frame like that. Cost - not much change from $20k. Then there's the wheels. Not everybody's bike, but old mate has a reputation for killing frames and cranks with his watt bombs so hopefully this one will be stiff enough. I look forward to seeing it in the flesh.

Sad news. The Cippo went down in the Brisbane - GC ride a couple of weeks ago and someone landed on him. He still finished and rode back to brissy but there was a bit of damage done. He was on a set of lightweight wheels which were also damaged. Insurance claim $19.5k. New frame hopefully by Easter as it has to be made for him - again.
