Well, at the grand old age of 43, I've decided to start racing BMX. I'm there anywhere between 3 and 4 times a week anyway with the kids so why not join in the fun. We have about 6 riders that ride in the oldies class and I think I'll fit right in. So, now I'm on the hunt for a bike. Pretty slim pickings locally, but some nice bikes further afield. I'm going to ride in the Cruiser class. Looking at a couple of Cruiser Pro Xl's. I'm not buying a base model bike. I'm going for something with all the good gear on it from the get go. Grow into one,  not out of one. I have my eye one a Yess Cruiser Pro XL Bendy with C/Fibre forks, Rythm Cranks, Envy wheels.  Also in the process of building a Crupi Junior for my boy. To say he's excited that Dad is going to be racing is an understatement. He's already talking smack about beating me. Good luck son.

Good onya Mike,  I can't help yo with any bikes but don't tie yourself to brand new. You can pick up really high speced  used bikes also.

Second hand for sure. The problem is all the nice bikes are 6 plus hours away fro me. No way am I handing over $1000 plus for a bike without seeing and touching it first. Makes it a bit tricky but I'll sort something out.

Picked myself up a race bike this weekend. It's a GT Speed Series Pro 24 Cruiser. Needs a clean and a service as it's been sitting for a bit. Has  got Answer Carbon forks on it already with some nice factory GT stuff as well. Also got some 24 x 1.75 tyres as it's running 1.40's at the moment.

thought i would ask here, rather than start a new topic...

my wife is looking to get a new bike, but i would like to get one better than a kmart model, but less than something like a giant hybrid (which i have, bought for around $500)

anyone got any suggestions about what/where to get?  looking to get a flat-bar hybrid style, for road and path riding mainly...

happy to look at second-hand, as long as condition was very good...

thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

I got the wife a Reid hybrid. Shimano gruppo and Alex rims - it rolls surprisingly well. The kids use it over their giant mtb's for longer rides.

Raced my first race meet last night. Dead last in all six races (which I expected, first time racing). We had a full gate in open wheeler.  Great fun. No stacks. Was even balancing standing up at the gate. My kids were cheering me on which was pretty funny. Even did a little tail whip on the last jump of the last race. Just coz I'm slow doesn't mean I can't be slow with a bit of style.

looking to give the young fella's BMX a freshen up...

new paint, etc...

any particular way to clean off the old paint that works for people? 

any particular paint/primer/clear coat to use?  techniques?

I freshened up an eBay special for my son. It's a knock around bike rather than riding his good MTB.

I stripped all the parts I could, then I took it to the LBS to remove the remaining bits, bearing cups etc. I told them what I was doing and they did me a deal on labour to strip and refit later. It was cheaper than buying the correct tools.

I stripped the stickers etc with wax/grease remover then hit the frame with some wet & dry sandpaper. I didn't go back to bare metal, just to smooth the surface. I got it probably 80% smooth.

I then sprayed a coat of etch prime, 2 colour coats, then 2 clear coats, I probably should have gone 3 clear coats. You can get the metallic paints from Bunnings.

Took it back to the LBS  to get the cranks, headset etc fitted, I then fitted wheels/tyres, brakes headstem/handlebars etc at home, then took it back to the LBS to get the cables fitted, brakes adjusted, new chain etc and they gave it the once over.

All up it cost about $300 in parts/labour etc. I probably could have bought a new bike for that price, it was the time working with my son on it that was worth more than that.

did a frame for a mate recently, bead blasted it with garnet and had it powder coated satin black...

Came up a treat, and pretty cost effective...

i won't be able to get it built in store (in mackay QLD)... but even with the assembly kit added, it's free postage which makes it pretty good value, i think...
