ITs funny, we used to have 1 bike that could do everything .. now you need a fleet of 1500 bikes for every situation

Still cheaper than buying cars :)

Now I want me a gravel bike..... but I'm looking for something more oriented for the road that can take 35-38mm tyres. The field of different gravel bikes is quite diverse, I don't think I want slack and burly. I think I want light and fast and able to handle dry gravel paths and tarmac. If it's going to be loose and rocky I'll take the MTB.
Any suggestions.

I think I've narrowed down what I want.

It's between a Specialized diverge and Trek Domane. Just got to find some that are big enough for my 6'3 frame to test ride.

Well I found a bike that can handle the Friday morning gravel rides. It followed me home  :cup:

Very nice, but let us see the drivetrain side :)

It's fitted out with all Ultegra.

Only downside is it has the cyclocross chain rings which are 46-36 with an 11-28 cassette.

I'm going to ride it like this for a bit and see if I'm missing some lower gearing for climbing where I live.

Lots of different views on chainring and cassette sizes these days, there's the sit and spin crew and the stand and grind crew. I'm a low cadence rider whereas most riders today are high cadence. Finding your all day riding cadence will help you work out what gearing you need.

Yeah I won't touch it until I log up some KM.

Easiest step is to change to a wider range rear cassette I think there is an 11-34 if I really need it.

I rode my local MTB trails this morning. I was pleased to feel the road hill repeat training during lockdown has done my legs some good. I was consistently riding up hills in bigger gears than usual and my recovery felt quicker.

My Garmin came with a cadence sensor.. Really helped me sort my gearing out when you know actual and average cadence.. Like D4D i naturally have a low cadence in the mid 70's where the modern thinking is you want to be around 85 to 90 which would have me bouncing off the bike

Repeats on hills, are always going to help, just like doing standing starts, four times a week. Do 250mtrs each time, the first three will get you muscles activated and the forth, you should be able to hammer it.  ;D

Yeah depends what effort you're doing. I've been doing a 5 x 100m out of saddle max effort on a 20% incline hill or a 5 x 1km seated 80% effort on a 10% incline hill. On the max effort I am close to spewing and my legs are screaming, on the 80% effort it hurts but not spewing

Yep but when I was a youngin racing at Elite level, I never did vomit, even though a mate doing the same training would.  ??? Now at the age of 60yrs plus, I can start dry retching after giving it my all for Team Sprint starts and and a flying 200mtr qualifying time.  :o

Not mine but a friend shared so we could exhaust ourselves on a 28 klm adventure behind Airlie Beach. Strangely we didn't see anyone else, is that social distancing.

It's a Mares but it's a 2016 model.
Was lucky to pick up a good example for the right price.
