Evolution of the 80 continues.... in part driven by Minister for Finance suggesting another trip to Tassie is on the cards (solo this time, no trailer but with dog) and so we're working out how to take the bikes down to Derby.... hence in part my other thread re touring tents.

I've been looking at rear mounted racks for the 80 to take 2 bikes (1x 29er and 1x 26 or a pair of road bikes), and having looked at all the usuals (Thule, Yakima etc), I remembered someone mentioning the iSi Bike Carriers, and also the GripSport racks.

Pricing up an iSi it's looking like around the $850 mark and the GripSport is very similar, and the Thule racks are in the same ball park.

The fun part is my bike is an XL 29er, whilst MfF is a small 26" wheel, so I need the height and length range to take those quite different sizes...

Any pros or cons to one over the other, particularly the iSi and GripSport?

G'day Ed, I've had an ISI rack for about 2 years - great, strong rack with the variable length that you're looking for - email them, they're a great company and they'll get back to you quickly.

I use the ISI every weekend and a mate uses a GripSport (we carry 4 bikes) - I would choose the ISI, especially if going off-road.

Cheers for that Tony, that was sort of the feeling I was picking up from around the web, they're much of a muchness, and it comes down to a bit of a personal choice and end use.

The iSi is tempting because it is so capable of adapting to the different sized bikes, possibly more so than that can see on the GripSporr.

If you're not going to use it 4wding, personally I wouldn't take my bikes on a dusty 4wd track, have a look at the Yakima HoldUp. I've had mine for a number of years and it has done a lot of work. It easily adapts to any size bikes, I've had everything from 20 inch up to 29 inch. It is a really good rack and very easy to use.

another vote for the ISI rack...

we have the four bike model and it is a dream to use... we have multiple sized bikes and it's very easy to change around...

our iSi rack has been across the Simpson 4 times now. Done a large chunk of the Anne Beadel "hwy" and most recently, a Madigan Line crossing.

It can, and has been, swapped between tow hitch mount on both our cruiser and the "half an 80 series" trailer and most recently also with a new mount on the drawbar on the trailer.

It's about to be swapped to the Supreme Getaway van on the drawbar next. (But we have a spare towbar mount with us in case we want to put some day trips and leave the van as a base camp)

I would not have any hesitation buying another one.

Derby really is a special place - trails are second to none and the whole town is geared towards bikes.

Yup, it's awesome Wait until you hit the Black Stump trails, they're epic. It's a great vibe in the town.

Just got back - the shuttle trails are nuts - we walked the double black Detonate trail one evening - the EWS riders have some skill (balls).

Only bad thing was that some lowlife scumbag used a bolt cutters on 2 padlocks / chains in a hotel car park in Devonport and stole my bike (last one on the carrier). Reported it to Tas Pol but don't hold out any hope. Hotel had cameras but waiting to see if it helps the police.

Anyway, Tassie is awesome- you get thieves everywhere

Yeah when you physically see Detonate then see the racers at full speed, it is unbelievable. They really commit and send it big time.

Did you ride Derby Monday 21 Jan?

So did we  and very lucky to miss the rain of Tuesday. We camped next to the pump track opposite the Trail Head

No  bikes with us on this trip as and we were down there for 3 weeks. We hired a couple of MadMtb.

Good stuff we rode ebike giant reigns covering 52km..never ridden an ebike before.... We have Reigns but not ebikes.
