Tony, moon phase will be waning gibbous at that time, so some spectacular views of the moon will be available without too much light (hopefully) for viewing planets and deep sky objects.

Mace I have been thinking that maybe we should have a bit of a poll to see how many would prefer to look through an eye piece( only one at a time but more personal) or via a camera hooked up to laptop so more can see at the one time( not as personal a view)? This would perhaps sway me to remove the big scope from the observatory to bring along; and see if I can borrow another camera for viewing fainter objects on the laptop(mine is good for planets/moon only).
If I end up bringing the big girl then 240V would be better as I will need to power the mount, 2x cameras, and 2 laptops. And I will definately need somewhere safe to lock up and keep dry from moisture after viewings as it is quite a few thousand dollars of equipment. Will also need help with lifting as its quite heavy.

If you want more info you can PM me and we can work out a time for you to visit me to see what is needed or get my phone number to discuss it.

Wow, the things swaggers will do to help out and make an event special.

Poppasmurf has agreed to bring his big 8inch telescope with all the goodies, laptops, etc, so groups can view easily off the screen.  We will work out secure storage and power for this unit, a bit of muscle power will be needed to assist with moving it from to and from storage and setup.

I will bring along a smaller 4 inch scope for eyepiece viewing - good for the moon and planets, but a bit small for deep space stuff.

If any others would like to bring along  their own smaller  telescopes im shure Shane will be able to give a few tips on setup and use.

Once again, thanx Shane.   :cup:

I am quite happy (actually excited better desribes it) to do this as it is an obsession of mine that I love sharing with others. I only have a couple of NON negotiable rules: Pease do not touch equipment(unless asked to do so) and absolutely NO insect repellent in the area of the scope, the problem with repellants is that if it gets on the mirror it eats the special reflective coatings and destroys the mirror.

This looks like a rippa of a trip. The missus and I discussed it today and we have a few commitements but if we can make the time and there is still room when we know what wwe are doing we will be there for sure.

poppasmurf

I've had a thought Mace......no it didn't hurt (before anyone asks LOL), I can also bring a full aperture solar filter that will fit your 4" scope for safe viewing of the sun if interested.

Cheers Shane

If I got this right, I always have trouble linking to pics, the picture shows roughly what image scale will be seen through the scope for viewing nights.

Sorry guys n gals, after some further investigation I have found that I had mis-identified the crater, therefore the dimension should actually be 124km not 60km.

Thanks for the offer Graham. I have a inverter/generator but not game to try with the expensive mount, in fact I only got it a few weeks ago so have not even tried it out yet. I am assured by Mace that we will have access to 240V so we should be right, once again thanks for the offer.

Very excited about this trip. The kia has been fixed after the great tree crushing incident of 2012. CT about to get repaired (canvas stitching repair and anderson charge not working for some reason).

I offer myself and my family's company, a guitar for tunes on request and perhaps some firewood for the communal supply.

For the record, where does one get a myswag sticker from?

Looking forward to meeting you all and shouting mace a beer for his efforts

Good Stuff!

The Kia looked nice and shiny in the last few pics.

GG has also offered to entertain us, so any muso's are more than welcome to bring their weapon of choice.  ;D

Will be firing a few threads up in a few weeks with more info, stay tuned.

Hi Mace and GU Rich,

Looking at travelling to the hi country with a few cockroaches at xmas. Can you shed some light on where we should go. Your Kelly country swaggers meet sounds great, however were booked for Yogi's Fraser Fiasco, plus its closer to home.
To go south is it feasible to get to the high country through Kosciusko NP into Vic and then tack east to the coast so we can head north. Any advise will be welcome. I will start looking at some maps etc but you guys should be able to jump on this with the right info.

Many thanks

Niley
