A major search is continuing for a hiker missing in freezing conditions at Mt Skene in the state's east.

The man, 30, was walking from Walhalla to Canberra on the Alpine Walking Track when he activated his emergency position-indicating radio beacon about 1pm yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said crews were searching Mt Skene for the Alphington man but he hadn’t been found.

She said officers trained to deal with rugged alpine terrain focused their search on the area east of Jamieson Licola Rd.

It is snowing and temperatures dropped below 0C overnight.

The man has been hiking through the high country for several weeks.

I hope it has a successful outcome. There wouldn't be a  much worse postion to be in caught out in the snow overnight or for any extended period of time.

My cousin and his wife plus a few of there friends have covered that walk from Walhalla and are up to around the Mt Howiit section. They have been doing it in stages. One easter about 2 years ago the weather turned nasty near Mt Skene and it snowed. Everyone got out fine with family and friends based in Jamieson, that's where they lived.. He mentioned to me that there are many sections of the walk that were very hard to navigate. Tracks intersections just didn't line up for had been altered since fire breaks had been pit in place during bushfies etc.Other sections were very overgrown slowing progress. I know one section they spent some time with maps etc just to make sure they were heading in the right direction. I have hiked up to Mt Howitt and the views are truly spectacular. We had a chat to a bloke who was doing the walk on his own from Walhalla to Canberra.

There are some great reads on the et about hikers that have completed to walk in amazing times.

Here hoping he is safe and sound as I type this.

UPDATE 8.50am: POLICE have found a missing hiker after an overnight search at Mt Skene in the state's east.

The man, 30, was walking from Walhalla to Canberra on the Alpine Walking Track when he activated his emergency position-indicating radio beacon about 1pm yesterday.

He was found safe and well just before 8.15am and walked out with police.

A police spokeswoman said officers trained to deal with rugged alpine terrain focused their search on the area east of Jamieson Licola Rd.

It is snowing and temperatures dropped below 0C overnight.

The man had been hiking through the high country for several weeks.

About 5kms south of the Licola-Jamieson Road, SW of Mt Shillinglaw. The lads from Mansfield did a stirling job walking in last night. I got to drive  8)

If he was a prepared bushwalker what was life threatening that he had to activate his EPIRB?

In a nutshell; at the time of activation he did the right thing, activate, bed down, don't move - he was unaware of his location. He could have done a few things prior to activating which was discussed with him. At the end of the day it all worked out - and he was appreciative and learnt a few things from it - a lot aren't and don't.  ???

Some of the things you can do to help yourself in these situations is firstly, keep a level head and stop and think. If you have an epirb and it is the newer style then keep the registration and contact numbers up to date. If activated these details are the first point of call for responders.

Always let someone know your intentions and leave a copy of your trip plan/itinery with a responsible person.

Carry additional food/water and a first aid kit.

Once activated (epirb) sit and wait. Depending on location/terrrain/weather etc - it may take some time to get to you.

Most important.....take/use commonsense.... ;D
