exploding plastic jerry can
« on: January 23, 2011, 09:22:24 PM »
Just for everyone's amusement

I'm heading away tomorrow for a few days with the kids, going down to Lake Jasper (pics to follow). I filled the water tanks on the glamper, but I thought i'd take a 20l jerry can as well. When i got it it was all filled with green crap - nice. So i got some of the cooper's bottle sterilising stuff and chucked it in there along with some boiling water - i put the lid on and shook it up. bam! the side flew out of the jerry can.....
 :worthles:

one new can later...

HaHa nice one  :cup:...
you didn't really want to drink out of that thing anyway ;)

Always a good idea to take an extra jerry of water, I was lucky once when I nearly holed the main water tank on a hidden stump and wasn't carrying the extra jerry that time ... never left home without it again
something about eggs and baskets I think

Stevo

yep you're right  :worthles:

Scarey stuff!  When you buy a new one pay the extra for the green ones, they are less likely to grow algae as there is no light.

Sodium metabisulphite will do that. Its also an oxygen scavenger so dont inhale its vapour or dust (it's a horrible feeling not bieng able to breath). I used to use it creating mining chemicals.

It looks like that can was pretty sun damaged the way the side broke out rather than the can actually blowing.  Another good reason for paying the extra for the good quality green ones, I think they are UV stabilised, the cheap clear ones arn't and get brittle.

yeah, when i compared the colour of the old to the new i think i've left that one in the sun for too long.

Cut the rest of the side out, put on the lid, great for oil changes

Hi,
UV damaged bottles can some times be restored with boiling water.
Back in my motorcycle touring days I used 5L fixer bottles for water storage, and they could get quite brittle with the sun.
If I cracked or broke one, I would put boiling water in the others to soften them up and could keep going with out further loss of water till I could replace them.
cheers

You're probably lucky it broke when it did.  It probably would have burst inside you car or camper otherwise.  As it is, you gave yourself and us a good laugh (and scored a new oil drain tray).

the recovery from the bin was pointless. I grabbed it yesterday and the plastic all just broke away in my hand. It was *completely* rooted...
