The ROYAL AUTO magazine (RACV) asked a question ON FACEBOOK about real camping..
this was my reply
Camping is not in a caravan park, camping doesn't have nightly fees, real camping is free, a small cleared section in the trees or shrubs, a spot in the middle for a fire.
Real camping is putting up a tent (or swag etc), making dinner on the fire, then sitting around the camp fire telling tales or just sitting there watching the fire and enjoying the real surenity. The peace and quiet, and looking at the stars, you can easily count more than 6 stars in a flash on any clear night.
Real camping is waking up to the sunrise after listening to the wild life walking around during the night. Get the fire going and sitting the billy on the fire as it gets going. AS the others wake up and warm them selves by your fire.
The billy boils, you grab a stick to pull it out and pour a few cuppas then place it back in the fire to boil again.
Real camping is when there is nothing at your camp site when you get there, and nothing left when you leave..
Yep that is camping.

You forgot crawler gears ;D

You forgot crawler gears ;D
Just drink more beer while while sitting around the fire.
Instant crawl function occurs approx 5 beers after the wobbly boot.

# Camping is what your missus is prepared to live without for a few days ;D
# 4WDs are defined "clearly" between driving an agricultural vehicle and a normal car. Please note this is also defined by your missus ;D
Ones rhetoric on the definition of "Real Camping" will vary significantly with the individual (missus). Similarly Bear Grylss's definition of drinking piss varies from many
Each to there own ???

NO
I only have one locker, 2.5 exhaust, 3 inch lift, and 33" tyres..
I go 4wding for environment, rear difflock is for making sure I get there and I look after the track, tyres and my rig.

We usually do bush or beach camping where there are no power and amenities..
But we just booked ourselves into a caravan park on the Sunshine Coast for 4 days and we are still CAMPING..
I really don't give a rats ar$3 where people want to go camping as long they are out there enjoying this great country..

Dictionary definition:
Camping
noun
noun: camping
1. The activity of spending a holiday living in a tent.
Wikipedia:
Camping
Camping is an outdoor recreational activity. The participants (known as campers) leave urban areas, their home region, or civilisation and enjoy nature while spending one or several nights outdoors, usually at a campsite. Camping may involve the use of a tent, caravan, motorhome, a primitive structure, or no shelter at all.
Camping as a recreational activity became popular in the early 20th century. Campers frequent national or state parks, other publicly owned natural areas, and privately owned campgrounds. Camping is a key part of many youth organizations around the world, such as Scouting. It is used to teach self-reliance and teamwork.
Camping is also used as an inexpensive form of accommodation for people attending large open air events such as sporting meetings and music festivals. Organisers often provide a field and other basic amenities.
My take:
Scenario 1: So we're traveling down the east coast, staying in national parks (camping). For arguments sake, in a Jayco Duck (new model). After a few days on the road we reach Torquay and set up on a site in a caravan park on the beach for a couple of nights, in preparation for an assault on the great ocean road.
Question: Having arrived back in civilisation (after camping our way down the coast), are we now still not camping ?, or have we crossed an imaginary divide into another realm.
Scenario 2: Dad, mum and the billy lids are taking their annual pilgrimage to the Twin Pines Caravan Park on Lake Whatchamacallit. Good old dad hitches the caravan up to the vehicle, loads the family and hits the road. On arrival they set up the van, annex and a tent for young Harry (who's become quite independent of late). They swim in the lake, play spotto and scrabble at night. Mum catches up with Delores on site 763, and Dad chills out beside the chilly bin (yes he's a Kiwi). My how they love their camping holiday.
Question: Who's going to tell then that their not camping ?

X2 this is us most often we bush camp no amenities or power but next month we are going to a caravan park that is reported to be a fabulous place for dogs and since we like to take Dizzy our fur kid on our trips we are pleased that we will have a fence caravan sight and she will be able to be off lead in that area with us and we can visit the beach etc. But we will still be camping and not leaving things that weren't there already as when we bush camp.

Where do you draw the line
Middle of nowhere, /10 minutes from civilisation / in a tent int the back yard with the kids
No one in sight / a few others over there / with 47,000 others living in tents at the Southern 80
No amenities / drop toilet / non smelly drop toilet / basic shower / proper toilet and showers
Swag / tent / roof topper / camper trailer / caravan
Free / fees (national park) / caravan park
No power / 12 volt / genie / 240 volts

I do all of the above so this make me a camping "whore"? :o
I reckon camping is different to different people. Just like exercise is different to different people.
You may not run a marathon, but a gentle walk around the block is still exercise.
How can anyone quantify what is "real" or not?
So how long is that piece of string? and how much popcorn will I need for this thread?
;D :D >:D

Isn't camping what you want it to be, just like "fun".
I think its fun to jump off a tall structure with a rubber cord attached to my feet. SWMBO thinks its fun to ride horses. Hare to argue one isn't fun as it is a matter of perspective.
Real camping is also a matter of perspective. Each to their own.
But I think the aim is the same, escape.

Hi Guys....here's my take on camping....I think camping is simply this....having less labour saving devices/comfort than we would have at our disposal. At the end of the day though...it really is a state of mind, for instance my stepson considers any accommodation less then 4stars camping. And me,..well any time ive got the roof top tent up is camping.....regardless of where I am.
Great forum folks......im in the process of researching CTs, and it looks like I may have found one that ticks my boxes. ;D
Cheers Greg.

At the end of the day I like different "camping" depending on the situation. For me getting out in the swag, cooking with a hotplate over the open fire, having a couple of drinks with family & friends is the ultimate way that I enjoy "camping".
But when you have a wife that loves creature comforts 3 kids under 11 including a daughter under 3 its just easier and simpler to head off to a CP so they also enjoy themselves. During these "camps" I love having 240v in hot and cold wether to power the heater/aircon and have plenty of fridge space for beer, the kids meet plenty of friends and run themselves ragged sleep 12 hours a night and its all good.
My Boys love tent "camping" in the bush & I have now starting to get the lovely, thinking about free camping more which is great ( the myswag weekends we have been on have helped).
I'm just thankful I can get away and not be stuck doing "house chores" without the CP stays we would have been away about 2 weeks in the past 2 years but staying at CP we have been under canvas for close to 200 nights.
As previous posts, just get out away form home and spend quality time with friends & family. Its better than doing stuff around the house and going working!!
Swannie
PS when we CP at Port fairy over summer, there was what they thought were hard core campers jokingly giving me a hard time over my setup, ( glamper was the word that came to mind) Surprisingly when it was 45 degree heat I had the so called "hardcores" enjoying a refreshing ale in my Swan while the aircon was doing its jobs nicely at around 21 degrees :)

Yep thats the one...fast and easy to set up and pull down. I was hopeing I wouldn't need to buy a trailer and the dmax would be enough fitted out with a roof top tent and awning.....but ive run out of room to carry all the camping stuff sigh.....so that's why im thinking about a trailer......plus I like the freedom of my vechicle being separate to the campsite if I wish. ;D

That's a ripper. I like the XTrail version of that also. Simple, easy, small enough to just tag along. Go for it. If it's got the Drifta name on it, you can't go wrong. Both would fit my idea of real camping! While I love swmbo's Trackabout, it really is an offroad glamper compared to these:-)
