Any Swaggers have experience with the Kogan mobile phone offers? They seem like a good deal, but it's apparent from other sites that there are some serious doubts about what the word "unlimited" means when applied to phone calls, texts and data downloads.
Cheers, Tony

have a look at this.... yes not so unlimited....

All of the telcos have a "fair use" policy. There will always be the odd one or two who abuse the system. And yes they are normally the ones who get all the media attention too. Make themselves out to be martyrs. Boo hoo.

It sure does seem like a good deal.
I ordered a Kogan SIM last week for one of our work phones.
If it turns out ok.... We will definitely be changing 5 other mobiles over.
I will keep you posted

The wife has one in her iPhone 4S and it works as well if not better than my iPhone 4 on a full Telstra Plan. Recently we stayed at Marion Bay in SA which is very rural and her download speed was twice what I was getting. Both on Telstra, doing a speed test to the same server etc. yet consistently hers was twice the download speed than mine. Wasn't happy!
-
I ported my number to Kogan from Crazy Johns and its been pretty good so far. I love not having to worry about excess usage and the 6g of data is heaps (even if it is charged in 1mb increments) who cares cause it's still way morethan the other providers e.g. teltsra only gives you 1.5G on a $60 plan.
Cheers

I set my MIL up on Aldi, that has been good. Very good rates, I'm annoyed that my wife is now on a contract else she'd be using Aldi (Telstra) too.
Of course, when you're paying a lot less you do get less. Reaching customer service was not as easy as one would like.
-
The Kogan deal is cheaper than Aldi.......Kogan will only cost you $24.95 /mth if you do a 1 yr deal...
I have just signed up to Telstra again ( new Nokia 920 ) and the only reason I didn't go with Kogan was the MAYBE lack of reception while out in the bush camping........Kogan don't get full coverage from Telstra ( as well as no 4G ), but how that affects you out in the fringe areas is debatable ??.....I have a friend you has just signed up with Kogan, and is more than happy ..
-
If you're worried about KM/telstra 3G wholesale coverage vs straight Telstra then Boost mob is for you although a bit dearer with less download allowance. Horses for courses and yes KM have recently announced 400Mb limit a day (6Gb/month is 200Mb/day average recall) and you may be kicked out if you breach that fair use/personal use only policy.
-
The Kogan deal seems good. I've looked into of myself and was imprased with the deal, and being g on telstra network, can't be any worse than my current Amaysim piggy backing to optus.
The 6gb is interesting, only getting 4gb (also unlimited text and calls) with amaysim. Currently pay $39.90 month. $37.90 with wife's staff discount when buying through her work.
-
I work at a fairly remote mine site, where Telstra has been our only option.
A couple of the lads have made the change over to Kogan and coverage is equally as good as Telstra.
If nothing else Telstra will have to start to sharpen the old pencil a bit.
-
Not likely to happen. Look at the cost of competing ISP's. Telstra thinks they don't need to compete because they have better network infrastructure. And on the whole, they do.
-
If nothing else Telstra will have to start to sharpen the old pencil a bit.
They are but just running a business model like Qantas/Jetstar in order to cream off lucrative high end users with 4G and marginally price the already sunk cost 3G to keep Optus and Voda hones (ie poorer). Just extracting the most out of their capital with stratification of the market and the various demands.

1 in every 500 get booted off for exceeding fair use guidelines and the usual suspects want a Royal Commission or call out the army or some such. As if the terms of Koganmobile's offer aren't abundantly clear to anyone of average intelligence. Sheesh! What a bunch of sooks we've become.

Exactly, while some complain I'll be happy to never have to worry about paying extra on a mobile bill (or at least until they kick me off ;D). In all seriousness, you would have to be on your phone a ridiculous amount for them to kick you off, but even then you still won't have to pay any excess usage.

One chick did 60 SMS in a day, hardly flooding the network.

cheap is good LMAO!...
Kogan Mobile, under fire over the suspension of hundreds of customer accounts, has filed a lawsuit against its major partner seeking to prevent further customer from being cut off.
Consumers flocked to Kogan’s $29 prepaid unlimited calls and texts plans, which included 6GB of data, but many were dumped from the network for apparently making too heavy use of the service.

I have been with kogan for 2 months, Lebara prior to that (Vodafone) and Amaysim (optus) beforehand.
The service leaves both for dead. Voice call quality is great and 3g speeds are good everwhere I have reception.. I did the 12 month 300 buck option.. on the offchance something happebed and their monthly fees increased

I currently use Amaysim, same deal, unlimted calls/text/mms except 4Gb Data and $39.90 a month.
Kogan at 6Gb a month and cheaper would be ok, we sometimes tether the phone and laptop by wifi.
Incidentaly, my wife still has the Lebara, my first sim card I got on return home. The cheapest overseas calls to be had, direct from cell phone.
-

Basically they want mature working adults not schoolkids so that adults can have an enjoyable network experience, given the providers know 20% of users chew 80% of the bandwith. In that regard I've had very satisfied reports about KM from 3 mature working adults so work out where you fit.

Interesting to see if you feel that same as I do.. 80% of the time Amaysim mobile data is painfully slow.
Pretty much all the time with lebara calls constantly broke up and became difficult after 30 seconds of talk

Yeah, I'll go along with all that.
I do find Amaysim is slow, but then my Dads Telstra phone, and USB data connection is also slow.
Apparently it all depends on how the wind blows, Dad states that when travelling, in other areas, his Telstra connection is like chalk and cheese.
I'll also agree that its the area where we are..........
But yeah, Amaysim is frustrating at times.
Likewise, I'll also go along with the statement that Lebara drops out.
Calls are cheap, but connection charges are the killer.
Drop out and you inevitably call again.
For overseas calls, its cheapest alternative.
Dont have a home phone, so calling cards arent an option.
Havent found anything cheaper for the wife to keep in contact with her family in Europe.....?
-
Actually, wife has just this moment grumbled the internet is painstakingly slow.........
shes currently tethering her laptop to the phone.
I'm cruising myswag, and wouldnt have thought i'd be taking up all the bandwidth >:D
-
They're aware of the problem and working on it, probably with peak pricing, or like KM by kicking off the kids and freeloaders-

Crikey, there are some unhappy campers over on Whirlpool! I have the Kogan sim, and a new phone, but I'm not sure I'll bother putting them together now. That way I'm only $5 out of pocket,
Cheers, Tony

WP is full of geeks and freeloading downloaders who were instantly attracted to that 6GB/month on the Telstra network and naturally wanted to be blind to KM's 'reasonable use' terms. They are not representative of the mature adult population here so go figure.

Thats not quite correct. The "reasonable use" terms actually did not start until April 6 (at least in the email I received, I have had an account for 3 months).
Of course the descriptor "unlimited" is one that has some definition as far as the TIO and ACCC are concerned in telecommunications area. The current data restrictions are a very recent addition to the T&C at KM.
Many appear to have been dropped because they were a "business", even people who advised they hardly used the account at all.
A mature adult would actually read the full context of the discussions on whirlpool and realise that many people purchased a product with a product description and the product was not delivered.
The recent removal of speed throttling shows that the concerns of many users were in fact correct and the granting of an injunction against ISPone and an order to reinstate booted users vindicates their position.
I have a KM sim and it is going fine the only reason I have not ported away (because I feared being kicked off for some unknown and obscure reason) is the injunction.
Even geeks and freeloading downloaders have a right in Australia to use a product they have purchased and , at least before April 6, use it in a way commensurate with the conditions of purchase.
-
They got some points as you say Geoffwin but I am reminded of the young bull and old bull-
Young bull to old bull excitedly: Hey the farmer's left the gate open to the heifer paddock so I'm gunna race over there and give half a dozen of them heifers what for! :D
Old bull ruminating to himself: You do that young fella but I'm gunna finish chewing my cud and mosey on over and go through the whole herd all night 8)
I'll likely give Kogan mobile a run in my own good time when they've ironed out those teething problems and the rush has settled down.
-
I'm with Kogan. Recently my data was disconnected while I was still well under the data limit. Trying to talk to customer service proved to be nearly impossible. It took more than a week to get through to them.
-
Take them to the TIO. Every TIO complaint costs kogan money. Enough complaints to the TIO will see this fixed. And may see them fined by ACCC..

Over 400MB download a day or 60+SMS a day and your daily phone calls and times were....?
I agree KM have to honour their original contractual terms with each and every consumer but the question here is just what did you personally sign on to and agree to at the time?
-
This is the current court issue. Kogan and its upstream provider.
Kogan Mobile details ISPOne's alleged betrayal. http://t.co/IHQBVRennW

When I signed up there was no mention of daily limits, only the 6gb per month data limit. However, I make almost no calls and send about 5 texts maximum a week. I got the contract primarily for the data that I need to check a few emails everyday, and to use the google maps navigation on my iPhone - travelling no more than 250km per day outside of cities this should not be an issue. It seems in my case the data usage gets set back to 6gb once a month. They zero'd mine but didn't reset it back to 6gb. Mistakes happen, but the real problem was the inability to get through to them to get it rectified.
-
And may see them fined by ACCC..
FUNNY OF THE YEAR!!!! ACCC do anything but threaten? hahahahhahahahahahahahaha
-
Yes yes. :)) I did say May. I need more smiley faces.
We can only hope.
-
Fair enough fridayman but when I spotted on WP that proposed plan of a brand new kid on the block in KM coming and those rates and download allowance, blind freddy could see the geeks, kids and freeloaders would be all over it like a rash so don't be a pioneer with them prodigy meboy or else :'(
KM were clearly caught with their pants down and they'll be struggling for a while to get it right, although they were always going to be a low service onliner at those rates.
As for ACCC fines, how on earth will fines help them get on top of things any sooner? We want entrepreneurial mobile supply not nanny state 20/20 hindsight all the time and there's always more experienced Boost mobile or Aldi to consider until KM get it right or die in the attempt.

Ruslan kogan is a big fella. He isn't curing cancer. He is buying himself another new Ferrari. * wiki says he has a BMW. But at net worth $150million. The car isn't an issue :)
He didn't design a leading new product and then discovered a whoops.
His team of highly paid lawyers entereted a contract with an upstream ISP provider reselling Telstra service who have come to disagreements over said contract.
Accc / consumer law stands. They won't do a thing. But this isn't limiting innovation or changing a market. It's taking advantage of a situation and trying to make money. On all sides.
Those highly paid lawyers once again will be the only ones who end up profiting from this. Like any other contractual breach or disagreement that ends in the courts!!
You get what you pay for! :)
If we want better networks. Maybe mr packer jnr and me rich can restart their onetel plans. That worked well for them the first time. :)
Cost of business. This 700mhz low band 4g rural spectrum auction that starts 23rs April. The government want $2 billion from the operators. For a piece of paper. Each tower costs $300k to build year one. It's not a charity :))
Let alone the not in my backyard. Kinder. Kangaroo paddock. Neighbourhood. Beachfront. Cave. People. One objection and it takes 6 months of arbitration. On top of the typical 18+ month delivery timeframe.
My phone drops out but my coverage is bad and I don't want a tower.. Because I don't trust the world health organisation and my tin foil hat is a bit tight.

Hmmm.. missus just got the email her mob will be cut off in the next 24 hrs and we're at Exmouth with no service on my Voda phone so will need to consider next best option. Seems Aldimobile was also caught up in the ISPOne debacle have cut a 3 month deal direct with Telstra but no go for Kogan as they're probably too cheap for Telstra to deal with so Ruslan has pulled the pin.
The email from KM states punters have 180 days to port elsewhere and all pre-paid will be refunded on a prorata basis so no big deal except for the inconvenience. Must say KM has been good thru the Territory and Kimberley (still tethering this on KM at present) but may consider Boost Mobile now as they have direct dealing with Telstra rather than one step removed. $40 unlimited calls and SMS with 3GB data for 30 days prepaid and JB HiFi handle their Sims whereas Aldi Sims are East coast stores only.

Rather simplistic for most households with total mobile and fixed internet spend plus the hardware/software upgrade merry go round. Not crying poverty, just priorities with comms spend among all the other hungry mouths to feed, not least keeping the 3 tiers of Gummint in the manner to which the've become accustomed :'(

Mate if you would like an Aldi sim, PM me and I'll pick you one up tomorrow and put it in and envelope to an address of your choice.
My son just got one today, we gave him the KM yearly plan for his last birthday in March so we will try the Aldi for now.
-
is it just me or is the term "unlimited" fairly unequivocal in it's meaning "without limit or end; on going"? thought that was the point? Surely placing a "limit" makes it no longer an "unlimited" plan and thus using the term "unlimited" would be false advertising? SO if it has limits, how can it be advertised as unlimited? Legally that is........
-

Well I think most of us understood 'unlimited' meant fairly generous within the context of personal use and reasonable use terms clearly spelled out by both Kogan and Aldi but the lawyers and pedants among us have clearly driven Boost Mobile to call their offer 'Boost UNLTD' to get around the ACCC nosewipers and nanny staters who think we're all children in need of some more mummying. Sweet Jesus the Kimberley is now full of warning signs every time there's the remotest possibility of we poor BBers coming to grief with Mother Nature ???
Funnily enough switching the missus to KM for the trip I was actually paying more than the $20/month on Voda Infinite for her and daughter. That's because son and I were paying $45/m each on Voda Infinite for biz 9we haven't got time for SMS or data during the day) when Voda rep approached me about anymore family phones a couple of years ago when Voda were under the pump. He said he'd beat their current provider (TPG for $20 for $300 worth of calls a month) and true to his word they went on Voda Infinite for $20 each. The last of the big spenders upping the missus to KM for $299 for 12months worth as you can tell ;D
-
This is a recent Comms Day pdf. It's a regular email that is sent out to those in the IT industry (where I work) or to anyone that signs up for it (I think it's a premium service?).
It has some interesting information relating to Kogan Mobile :)
-

I was with Kogan. Was good while it lasted and no issues. Made the simple switch to BOOST and the only downside is 3G of data instead of 6G. But BOOST has better coverage as they us the full telstra nextG network. Why would anyone pay telstra $100 a month for the same deal (unlimited calls and text, 3G of data) and the same coverage. And BOOST is actually owned by telstra, go figure.
-
Kogan have reportedly saved the deal, for now at least.

Thanks to markg66 we picked up his posted Aldi sim addressed to cara park in Geraldton yesterday and would you believe it the porting over from Koganmobile to Aldi went without hitch online in a couple of hours just after an SMS from Telstra warning the missus had 7 days to move to another carrier and restricted use. Had paid up the 12months with KM so apparently that meant notice of cutoff was later than lesser period purchasers, but all would be cutoff over the month. Now we'll see how quick KM refund unused credit.
Thanks to markg66 for his generosity and effort here and since he's adamant he doesn't want reimbursing for any out of pocket I'll donate a further $15 to Myswag on his behalf for the benefit of all.
-
Am I missing something here or has the Paypal donate button gone walkabout?
-
I signed up with Kogan, initially for a month to see how it went, then ported my number over and went the 12 months. I've now ported over to Aldi ( had my son in Brisbane buy me a sim and post it over ), been changed about a month. Just received an email from Kogan saying my refund was on it's way. Getting $271.15 out of $299 so pretty happy with that :)
