Which is the better option... mounting a shovel on the 'outside' of a roof rack or 'inside' on the tray? Or is it just a personal preference? Have a Rhino Rack tradie platform on a Ranger. Thanks.
Mounting on the outside is fine as long as the handle faces the front of the car.
In the event of an accident, no one wants a shovel hurtling towards them blade first at 100klm/ hour

Thanks.
Mmm, I always have the shovel with the handle pointing to the rear.

Lots of people do, but that doesnt mean that you will enjoy a shovel hurtling towards you or your loved ones.
A loose clamp or screw can mean a deadly projectile, however turning the shovel the other way round makes it impossible for the shovel end to slip through any mounting device.

My shovel, is mounted inside a lenght of DWV 50mm.
Next to the roof basket, capped at the front end, it is padlocked through the spade to the basket.
The upper tailgate of the 80 series doesn't hit it.
And I can remover it when I have 270° awning out.
Happy to take a pic if you need it.
You don't use magic to disappear, ya use a 4x4 & Swag.
In line with our progression from tent to swag to camper to caravan, we've just taken our shovel off the top of our 4wd and mounted it east west on the front of the Cvan.
Might have to take it off if ever on a long gravel road, but for now, most of our travel will be on tar and riverside campsite entry dirt tracks which will be fairly slow
Now that I never thought of. I've got a camper trailer but the stone guard should be wide enough!
