Having breakfast this morning and reading the Vegemite jar there is a symbol on it AFIC Halal Authority???????????????
This is Aussie Kraft Vegemite.
Why does it need to be there???????
Then looking at a few other things Sara Lee strawberry cheesecake has AFIC (The Australian Federation Of Islamic Councils INC)
I thought this was Australia.

A. Because Australia is a multicultural society.
B. Because vegemite, and a lot of our other "Aussie" brands, are now owned by international corporations.
C. Because this product and many others are now marketed internationally.
D. And why the hell does it matter anyway.

I work in food manufacturing. And we are contemplating going full Halal. We already have a halal certificate for some of our products, but trying to manage the inventory of Halal and non halal meat,
The main reason we haven't as yet is breakfasts and the Love of Bacon in breakfast dishes.
That a product had been certified Halal doesn't mean anything has changes, more likely research shows that market share is dropping and if t hey can be certified Halal that it opens a large piece of the market which may have seen the product as not permissible to eat.
I think I'll have bacon and egg burgers with my beer for dinner
It matters because its another piece of BS red tape companies need to through. This ain't free, this is some group put together that charge for this symbol.

Yep, in Australia in 2013.

Yes you do need to pay for your halal certificates the same as you have to pay for any certification. But you as a business make a call do we want to include Muslims in our target market or not.....

I understand the point being made and there's no doubt they're tainted by the actions of their beliefs.
Having said that, some 50+ years ago our grandparents were faced with a similar situation and many of them would have then been on one side of the fence or the other.
Post war saw the greatest influx of european immigrants into Australia and many then Aussies felt the same way.
Refering back to my opening point and I'm sure it might raise some very polarised views, but there wouldn't be many people not agree that today we are a better smarter richer country as a result of the european multiculturalism.
It's a strong culture and I don't believe any minority will ever rule, but we should be accepting of everyone, including process and packaging labels if needed.
We stopped into a KFC in Broadmedows for some lunch, they too didn't sell bacon on their works burgers.

The underlying theme is that when the European immigrants came here, they didn't try to change our culture or way of life, like it is happening today.

Why should we as Australians have to miss out on our bacon burgers.
Why do we have to change the way our food is made.
I can now understand why the symbol is on there (for that market).
As some have already said KFC and Maccas has changed it's menu, why not just have a halal take away shop.

after writing my previous post, I then thought the same thing, particularly as white folks committed genocide of them in Tas, but the 1860's saw the largest influx of Chinese into Aus, and the white europeans at the time also murdered them for allegedly stealing white mans gold that was still in the ground.

Wow, talk about trying to turn a molehill into a mountain. How is a tiny symbol, probably there for no other reason than to increase the products' market share, actually "changing a nation" ? How is that symbol effecting your Aussie way of life? How has it changed the taste of the product?
KB
Reality check.
Who here has tasted a distinct difference in Vegemite since this 'nation changing' halal approval? I had it on toast this morning and noticed nothing... What dangerous additives have been added for halal approval?
Would have thought this is a good thing. Now other cultures can join in and experience a food unique to Australia.

If people are unhappy with public companies that support religious views simply don't buy from them, I no longer eat vegimite, I don't goto halal supportive food venues and I don't goto church sunday mornings,I'm not a big believer in supporting other people beliefs when I disagree with them.So I'm sure as hell not going to support it with my hard earned $$

I'm guessing that comment was directed at me,,, soooo ,you also left out a whole lot of other companies that have religious connections, I'm sure it would be impossible to find one that dosn't and this isn't a new thing lol ."Does my head in" ? nope not all halal verified food go through a certification process,in order to get a certification on a particular item of food cost companies $$$ and comes with a nice little label on there food item giving me the OPTION to buy/not buy so at least I know my $$ won't go towards funding the certification of any foods where the company usually gets lobbied into it in the first place.

I'm a big fan of Dick Smith, Don't really understand how anyone can live in THIS country and not be
Behind the scene, this is quite an interesting issue.
I have no objection to a manufacturer making a commercial decision to decide to halal accredit in the basis of increasing market share for goods that require halal accreditation (meats, etc).
The issue behind the scene seems to be that it is becoming a business norm (and therefore additional cost) for larger processors, one that small processors may not be able to afford.

Kraft really went at DS when he anounced Ozemite. First Kraft went out and registered the name Ozemite and then locked all the major brewerys into contracts that forbid them to sell the yeast by product used in Vegemite to anyone else.
not trying to turn this into a racial thread or anything similar BUT... my concern goes way past the muslim symbol...... bring back Pauline

Supermarkets with whole sections full of wine and beer 8) makes sense to me.
Even thought this thread has gone slightly off topic...
I don't get why the Islamic community makes such a big thing over whether or not they will eat a food product (I'm talking about meat) because the animal has not been slaughtered in accordance with an outdated religous ritual, often to the animal's distress depending on who is overseeing it.
As for non-meat food products... WTF
