Hi all
Apart from usual hoses and belts for the cruiser, what essential spares should I carry? Bearings have been replaced on the truck last Friday. Bearings are new in the CT. the trip is from Melbourne up the guts to the Gulf, up to Kakadu, Bungles and maybe Flinders Ranges.
Wayne
Radiator maybe????..... ;D
Filters for the car.......and a spare set of keys, just in case....
Bearings, seals etc for the trailer
You can really go to town after that.....
I would still take spare bearings. I had new bearings fitted before our Kakadu trip 2 years ago and one failed on the trip.
Fuses, duct tape, tyre valves, fuel filter, air filter,
Doesn't matter what you take as you never seem to have what you break...lol

You cant go wrong with any spares but I reckon a spare set of keys is very important.
Tub of grease
Zip ties
fencing wire
bag of rags
Tube of silicon
multi meter
dunny paper
various nuts and bolts
length of electrical wire
some crimps
ratchet strap
who are we kidding, you'll just call the RACV :)

Thanks, you just reminded me to upgrade RACV to the highest level. Definitely spare keys for sure and thanks everyone you prompted the memory bank.
Hi Wayne
It may be worth think about some garden hose (or something similar) around your under vehicle lines, brake lines fuel lines...you get the idea, this will prevent damage from rocks and the like when on rough roads. A spare air filter is almost essemtial when hitting dirt roads, but you have already done the Tanami, you know that.
If I think of more, that haven't already been suggested, I will mentioned them.

Tjupurula
You have a new car and new trailer.
If it has all been serviced, I don't think you will need to take much at all... something to patch a hole in a radiator, and new coolant...
More beer!

Coffee and Sugar. Oh wait you have that in the back of the car already haha ;D
I agree though on the tape, toilet paper, good first aid kit which is not really spare and I am certain you would have that. WATER

Thanks Symon, couldnt find it before.
Renee, thanks for the heads up on first aid kit, I have to add a few things which I forgot about. ;D
Hi Wayne,
I would add a puff pack of Graphite powder. (You can get it at bunnings for $10) It's best to puff some into all the locks before you leave (on the trailer) as the dust will make it hard to get the keys in. Graphite is the best for this as WD40 etc actually makes the dust stick more! It makes a huge difference. (I lock all the trailer latches when travelling)
Cable ties are very handy and a few different sizes can perform a lot of repairs.
In the last 6500klm I lost a pin from one of the drag chain shackles on a corrugated road so a spare shackle was handy.
A spare prescription for any medication you might need.
Safe travels.
Cheers Dave.

...and spare batteries and SD card.
A spare credit card that's not kept in your wallet. Also, advice from VKS-737; remember that you can't transmit credit card details over the radio so leave those details with a friend who can then relay them by phone to the towing service (in case they won't come to your rescue without that info)

Tyre plug kit.
Water.
Mesh for radiator cover.
Water.
Enough tools (and the correct ones) to tighten anything that can (and it will!) rattle loose.
Water.
Metal mend (the 2 part stuff) to fix a holed fuel tank. Also the plasic putty stuff for water tanks, jerries etc.
Water.
A few coat hangers. The metal ones. Can be used to re-attach an exhaust and can double as a spinefex remover for under the vehicle.
Water.
A sharp knife. Sounds disgusting, but to dispatch any animal strikes that arn't finished off.
Did I mention Water...........
Tyre pressure gauge and deflators.

just pack every thing you needed, but didn't have on the last trip.
Rule of thumb is you will only ever need whatever you did not bring.
Ear muffs for when the better half is giving it to you for not bringing a spare of whatever just broke.

Just don't leave them in the glove box!
You can never have enough spare parts but will always take too many. On our 18000km trip last year I broke/lost/had to replace:
elbow for water tank line - luckily had 40L spare water in drums
centre pin from trailer leaf
fuses
Anderson plug
air filter
bow shackle
bulbs
It is impossible to prepare for everything but I recommend a good tool kit. I had most of the required spares but was able to repair the rest with the tool kit until we reached the next town. Most things can be sourced out and about.

They are very good, I have a set as well...
A brass drift to remove a bearing seat. Had to do it on a boat trailer once on the side of the road and found that a big $2 shop screwdriver which has the strength of putty was also good - much softer than the bearing/hub so didn't scratch anything when it slips.
Get a spare set of bearings and seals (look up Bearing Supplies in the Yellowpages), fill them with grease then seal them in a bag. Vacuum sealer is great but a few zip bags will also work. A spare cap is also worth getting.
You can buy Rescue Tape from SuperCheap, particularly when they have it on special.
A windscreen repair kit is useful. Stops small cracks getting bigger. Spare headlight globes as well.

Extra toilet paper in the front of the car Wayne. You never know whenyou and the shovel may ahve to make a dash into the scrub.

oftern overlooked until too late!
A full roll is usually overkill. I pinch a 70% finished roll, wrap it in a plastic shopping bag, and pop into glovebox of every vehicle we have. With a family of 5 this does tend to get used often.
Also has sometimes helped out in fire starting duties

Wouldn't twigs and leaves serve both purposes as well?
A spare Anderson plug for the charging wire to the trailer.
Lost mine in the Oodnadatta and had to pay $19.40 for a half in Coober Pedy.
They do shake loose now and again so a spare is really handy.
Cheers Dave

I have just googled porta potti, now I surprised that people travel with a toilet and all. We are savages, as just use a shovel and run into the scrub, using the burn and bury method, but we do use toilet paper, as one can get splinters from leaves and grass. Yes it did happen.

Hi Wayne,
Here is a bit of a list of the items we carry when going remote. Although we haven't had to use many of them it is nice to know that they are there.
Sat Phone.
Self amalgamating tape (repairs holes in hoses quite nicely!)
Base plate for Jack
Filter and funnel for fuel
Wheel bearing and grease
Tool Box
Extra Jack/s
Fire extinguisher
Air compressor
Deflator
Spare Hoses
Spare Belt
Spare Fuel, Air and Oil Filters
Spare tyre carcass (not on rim)
Spare Tube
Compressor
Tyre repair kit
Tool box containing various tools/drifts for wheel bearings/
Screw Driver Kit/Socket Set
CRATE of bits and Pieces – Brakecleaner/WD40/silicone/electrical repair stuff/electrical cleaner, spare anderson plugs, multimeter, shackles etc etc,
5 Litres oil, 1 ltr gear oil, clutch fluid, brake fluid,
And if going to be really remote, a spare leaf spring set for the camper, u bolts, brake cable,
while it all seems a little excessive it all fits into quite small areas/behind seats, and has been known to save a lot of time if you ever do need to call on the "RACV" or equivalent.
Enjoy your trip....
Cheers,
