Just wondering if anyone knows what type of hitch this is called and what it's designed for?

Pintle hook
Pintle hook Designed for Large trailers with a 4.5t rating, you dont want these on your camper. LOL

This particular one will also work as a normal tow ball. A standard pintle hook is just a simple ring isn't it?
It looks like you could remove the top half of the contraption with a spanner and use it as a normal tow ball hitch. Probably not broad enough to attach a Treg or Trigg style though.

Most Pintle hooks are fully cast, EG: without the tow ball. The trailer, generator, compressor or what ever has the ring on the end of the draw bar.
Telecom/Telstra used to put these on all of their vehicles a few years ago, when they had a mix/match of trailers with both pintle rings and 0mm ball couplings. The pintle rings are noisy as buggery and allow far to much side ways movement, not allowing for much control if the trailer gets a sway up.

Forgot to add, if you leave it hanging out the back of the car, you will notice a large reduction in the number of people tailgating you :cup:
combination 50mm ball/pintle hook. Pintle hook are a popular choice for govt and defence use. They are a great hitch, easy to line up and connect and have great articulation. However some people complain about how noisy they are. Vehicle components make a pintle ring conversion,(DO65?) which apparently gives a quieter ride.
Cheers Chippy :D
I use the basic one for our big trailer. It is fairly noisy.
