Hi all.
I am looking into an extension strap or tree truck protector. Is there any difference between the two, other than maybe length.
I would assume the tree trunk protector could double as an extension strap, but the extension strap wouldn't cope slung around a rough barky tree too many times. Any opinions anyone?
Looking at either for some winching around the house and obviously when I get stuff out in the bush/beach.
I just pulled my recovery kit out to compare. All are Ironman straps purchased as part of a fairly comprehensive kit:
Winch extension strap - 50mm wide
Snatch strap - 60mm wide
Tree trunk protector - 75mm wide
Winch extension straps are generally bulky, I plan on replacing mine with rope.
Tree protectors are generally double thickness also.
I just looked at mine and same as above, My tree trunk protector is an ARB one and is thinker than the extension strap.

My extention strap is 30mtrs long, my tree protector is 3mtrs.
Buy both, it's much easier using both and saves the extention strap from being damaged.
Baz.
Tree trunk protectors are short and wide. That's the big difference. Don't muck around, get both.
if your trying to keep space down, get some plasma winch rope and make a winch extension out of that..
You can roll them up into postpacks. thats how the companies in USA ship them to AU...
I have 2x snatch straps, 2x winch extension and 2x tree trunk protectors + much more :)
Right, 3m and 30m is a bit of a difference. I see said the blind man.
Spose ill start with the tree trunk protector and when funds permit look at the extension. I also need a statch block. Who would have thought an accessory would need so many accessories, its a bit excess.
Lost: where do you get your plasma rope? I am looking at replacing the old winch cable with the lighter option, and make up the extensions if price permits.
Cheers.

awesome while $ is worth something
Just remember there is plasma and PRAZMA from china...
Tree trunk protectors are made wider to protect the tree by having a greater surface area on the tree they are less likely to ring bark the tree.
You could also use a trunk protector as a load sharing bridle on the vehicle.

You can use a winch extension as a tree trunk protector. We do it all the time in comps - evil stages where they make you use all your gear.
The only stipulation , in comps, is that the tree trunk protector must be used in such a way to achieve the same, or more, area of coverage on the tree.
In saying that, for the cost of a Tree trunk protector, just get both. It will make your recovery kit more versitile anyway.
