I have a second hand Warn 8,000lb winch.
Some people swear by their cheap Chinese jobs, others like to maybe spend a little more on the tried and tested brands. I wanted a well known brand, but didn't want to pay too much, so went with a second hand one.

I have a WARN 9.5XP and IMO one of the best on the market. Good line speed, nearly as fast as high mount. Very good build quality, get what you pay for.....
Ironman 12000lbs, its done three times the work my Warn did but the Ironman winch still works. Oh yeah, it cost quater as much too, oh and has a better warranty too.
If i was going to start again a 9.5 would be my choice too although i would miss the extra line capacity. I have a M1000 that i bought second hand in 96. It now has a 6hp motor and albright solenoid. I still have the original motors that work fine i just wanted more speed. I also have an m9000 that i bough second hand for my wife's ute that i haven't put on yet.

Hi I did notice that the Thompson winch is not listed, also it might be an idea to add to the poll if it is electric,hydraulic or PTO.
Tigerz, 12,000Lb and so far so good.
Hasn't been used in anger yet, but do make a habit of dragg'n something somewhere on a regular basis.

Always good advice, use them regularly. Tried mine for the first time in about 1.5 years to find out the solenoid had died luckily I didn't need it up on Fraser with the camper on the back.. All fixed now.
I have the Tigerz 12000lb. It has worked well so far and has been on the truck for over 3 years now. I regularly respool it so that it gets regular use.

Has anyone used one with a camper attached?
I've had two Warns.
XD 9000 which I still have and it has been on two vehicles (hiulux and 4runner) and copped a bit of use over the years. It has had onefull service and regrease and is probably due for another.Winch is over 15 years old.
Had a 9500 on the Big Blue Beasty but never had to use it. Sold it with the 80 fitted.

Hi, I have just picked up a Ridge Ryder 12000lb with Dyneema rope. Wouldn't have bothered but price was so goo I couldn't pass it up. I am starting to wonder now though as it is a bit of an issue fitting a Hawse fairlead to an ARB deluxe bar.....
Having trouble trying to decide what I need to do, probably need an offset fairlead as well as a spacer to get it out past the point where the rope will foul the bar. All due to the bar being designed for a Roller fairlead and wire rope. Oh well, these things are sent to try us I guess.
Will try and sort it out on the weekend.

Just use a roller fairlead with your rope, as long as the rollers are not damaged it should be fine.

With everything you get what you pay for. Next time you have a forum meet up, thy them all out side by side. The warn winches are so much faster than the others and my Ironman which has been serviced and then later replaced under warranty was the slowest.
You really should add the Avengers to your list as they won the 4WD Action winch comparo. Side by side it eats the Ironman for an extra $100.

The best way to go is to get the Dynamica offset hawse which is designed for the ARB bar and a matching Dynamica spacer to bring the hawse forward so you don't cut the rope on a side pull. These spacers come in 25mm and 50mm. The hawse itself is 25mm thick and there are locating pins that lock the spacers to the hawse. Here is one mounted to my Ironman bar with a 50mm spacer (I had to drill offset holes to mount it to my bar, but it bolts straight up to an ARB bar). You can choose to have the front of your hawse 25mm, 50mm or 75 mm from the mounting point.

as i think they make a certain product the winner for kick backs from certain companys just my opinion

The 10,000lb Warn is nearly 25-30KG heavier than the 9000....
M10000 for me - 6 1/2 years old, replaced one solenoid. Did pull it down a few years ago and when I put it back together sealed up the gaps.

Yes, Avenger Mako winch. Incidently, Mako designed the Premier winch but it is manufactured elsewhere. You are entitled to have an opinion about 4WD Action but don't let that make you overlook a very good winch. I though the comparo was pretty god really. In the comparo, it was only Premier, Avenger and Warn 9.5 XP that made it through all testing. Reading between the lines, the only reason why Warn did not get the award was the price....
Maybe you are right about 4WD Action but that does not explain why the Tigerz that is promoted heavily on their forum with free giveaways did not get through the testing... Just my opinion, but I think Avenger Mako is a step above Tigerz and Ironman.
As I said before, side by side testing of line speed is very revealing, well worth doing as it is an eyeopener. We did it in our 4WD club. Next time round I'd go Avenger or Warn.
i dont think line speed will bother me to much im more after a reliable winch that can get me out of a bog or assist me in getting up a track with the ct on then how quick it will drag me up of out of a spot
and the mako seems like a good winch and i havent discounted it at all im just after some honest results from people that use there winch in a similar manner in which i plan to ie towing a camper and remote travel not comps or winch truck events
i like the 2 speed 12000lb tigerz11 winch but im leaning towards a second hand warn and upgrade the motor and give it a service if i can find 1 for a good price

Yep, hauled the cruiser and camper out of Palm Creek no worries in a single line pull.
We have a TMax 9500 (not in the list). When I was looking at winches I thought this and Warn were on a par. I was particularly looking at duty cycle and braking capacity, two things that often get overlooked but can have a big effect on how you can use your winch.

I've got a 50plus(I have checked the serial number with warn) year old warn high mount (came with the car) it still works and has been used in anger plenty of times, but, it's well over due for a rebuild, I'll put new solenoids, seals and a 6HP motor when I get a second mortgage :'( but it will go for an other 50 years ;D and has about 50M of cable on it, so it's good for a double line put with a snatch block, witch gives me upto 16000pound pull ;D

So has anyone got any idea where to get the best deal on replacement parts for a warn 8274? I'm after a brake & seal kits, will put new solenoids and an upgrade on the motor(part # 7536) for a 6hp. will be better than new ;D

Troy, Check with Jason at Opposite Lock in Townsville. I know down here that they do winch repairs and stock Warn winches at OL, so they probably do the same up there.
