Once Shane decides on something, it will never change.

I'll say hello though.

So tell him if Shane wont come back, to come back as Dave :D he always seemed like he'd be a good bloke to have around a campfire.

Getting his own business up and running demanded a big chunk of his time / attention, I think was the main reason . DG.

After spending some time sorting the pool, it was time to hook into the Z car again.

I've never tried to remove the rocker cover before..... so,

The pesky little bugger came off.... JUST.
Clearence around the back of the motor to the overhead portion was close.... too close.
(Turbo Barra's have a red tappet cover.... ha ha ha couldn't help myself.... its red now.... looks awesome in there now.)

Anyway, a bit of fancy work with the angle grinder gave an extra 1/4 inch to play with and all is good in the world again.

Started shaping some sheet steel to replace the thin cardboard templates and we're underway.
Borrowing a gasless MIG tomorrow so I can zap the bits in place to check everything, really does friggin fit.

My welder guy can do the full weld job on the rotisserie, but I should be able to get the crap in place ready at least.

The rad, normally sits out front of the radiator support panel.
By throwing it behind, I still have room for a 16" fan and I can change the serpentine belt with everything in there.

A friggin big intercooler will go where the radiator would normally be.
The A/C condenser  is tucked right up against the grill.

If you noticed, the reverse lights come on as he stages.

That's the trans brake being activated, when it locks 1st and reverse together.
Then, you launch on a button on the wheel.

Hows the life of a gearbox then...

if built correctly, pretty good.

We'll be built to hold a 1,000 hp, but upgrades from there get very pricey, very fast.

A good Reid case can cost $2,500 on its own, our box will owe me $6,000 to be done.
Then there was the initial purchase and cost to blow the bell housing off @ $1,000.
Then there was the new custom bell housing and freight from the covid capital @ $990
Throw in a decent torque convertor @ maybe $1,500, some oil, a new gearbox mount, a good remote trans cooler and fan.
We'll have a $10,000 gearbox at the end of the build.

Wanna go faster, either spin the dice on what you have or start doubling the price.

Ha ha ha ha, drag racing, not for the feint hearted in so many ways.

In case you're wondering why i'm typing this at 2:27am, I've been awake for the last 2 hours running build stuff through my my stooped friggin head.

Just a little bit more to ponder Bruce.

We are going to run the smallest turbo we can that will deliver the boost we (Shane) wants.
We want the car to spool up quickly..... not sit there all day trying to get itself wound up.

We will be on the trans brake for less time that way. (The box gets hot fast doing it)

With the initial impact of power at a sensible level, the box should last really well.
We also won't be racing every weekend either.
Drag Challenge Week (5 days back to back) and Drag Challenge Weekend (3 days back to back) are our main events.
I may do the odd Nostalgia Meeting, once a year.
I will do the Winternationals and run in Super Sedan as SS/BB class.
The rest of the time, it will just do street duties with a simple 350hp tune in it.
With the Fleetwood and the Zephyr to choose from, the mileage won't be excessive.

In comparison, when I drove the 34 Ford, being a blown set up, the initial step of the throttle was brutal.
You can't leave the line softly in that style of car/engine and believe me when I say..... you get the fukk outta there quickly.

Having said all that, even in the 34, I would pre stage on the footbrake and always try to stage first.
I had a great knack for bumping into full stage on the brake, hit the trans brake button and pick up the throttle to 4,000 rpm.

This way, we were making boost and ready to roll.
The first second is the hardest, getting a good clean launch and getting focused on which way you're going.

Any drag car, can go straight, left, right, up or instant wheel spin.
You have sweet fukk all time to react and react smoothly.

This pic will give a fair idea of what happens in a blown application.

Virtualy running on a Single wheel ....  Fronts doing airtime, left rear unloading to a full spinning balloon doing little and  relying on the torque loaded Right rear to grip and send you straight  off the line in the blink of an eye ....    :cup:

In an effort to have the car ready for Shane on Friday....

Seats and Shit are out, entire front clip is back off it.

Shane said, you knock out the firewall and tunnel, i'll weld while you and Doug trim.

Doing the same job on the Datto all those years, nearly did my head in.
Knocked out 2 sides to extend into the cabin.... they sort of fitted ok.

Made a section for behind the engine, looks like a cathedral window.
Spot welded those in with a borrowed mig.

Measured, then double measured, how I thought the tunnel would, or should or even could.... look.

Cut the required section out of the main piece, after 6 trees, found one I was happy with.
Started rolling the sheet, wide at the front (Bellhousing), narrow at the back (extension housing).

Did a trial fit..... sort of looked ok.
Trim some excess fat (sheet, not me), even better fit.
Did a skinny minny final trim..... FUKK..... it looks pretty fukkin good.

I got so excited, I had to sit down and have a breather.

That is one MAJOR portion of the car build that really helps us move forward.

You have no idea, the stress I went through trying to work out a solution on the ol Datto.
And, this one will look better too.

Looks like we're going the beach (sunshine coast) on Friday.  :cup:
