88 days since I last filled the tank
« on: May 05, 2020, 04:16:23 PM »
Decided to grab a tank full of cheap diesel ($1.059 at Yatala) and when I went to record the fill on my phone I found that it's 88 days since I last filled. That's nearly 3 months! Bloody hell this Covid-19 sure is a kill joy :(
Cheers, John.

The cheapest I've seen in Brizvegas was 98c, but that only lasted for 1 day. Costco still has it at that price but you need to be a member. I often fill up there but atm it's a bit out of my way.
Cheers, John.

I got in the car the other morning and instead of the GPS automatically telling me the best route to the office it gave me the best route to Bunnings  :cup:

Wait till all this covid rubbish is gone in 18 mths - petrol will skyrocket to $3 a ltr to make up for it.

We're still, well, couple of days ago, 89 cents for proper 91 Statesman fuel and a 1.12 for premium Caddy fuel.

Ethel 91 is about 85 cents, but no fukker buys it.

Not wanting to be a killjoy but something to consider. Don’t leave the diesel sitting idle in your tank for too long or it may get algae as my patrol did a few years ago.

I was working in Saudi and coming home every 3 months. My Patrol got algae in the diesel without me knowing it. When I came back I couldn’t wait - i jumped into the car, drove a few k’s and she died! Got her towed to my mechanic and the result was a blocked fuel line and a wrecked injector pump. Not worth repairing it so sold her for next to nothing.

It could have been avoided by putting in an additive or getting someone to give her a run every few days.

I've been keeping the tank topped up the whole time, by refilling as soon as it reaches 3/4 (about every 2 weeks! ;D).

Even just using a small amount all the time will still turn the tank over, won't it ???

58 days and counting since my last fill. Like many others, what I save in fuel working from home and not going anywhere is getting spent at Bunnings

I have a long range tank and I add some Diesel Power additive if its going to sit for a while.

Best just keeping the tanks topped up, to give as small an airspace as possible. You wouldn't notice any deterioration after even six months. If you leave too much air gap over a length of time, you get water condensation, and the possibility of diesel bug growing. Even using just biocides in the diesel, the tank needs to be moved around to get it mixed, or it won't reach the fuel/water interface where the fungus grows.

A couple of years ago, I got a leak in my sub tank, which only leaked when it was about 3/4 full. I intended to remove the tank and check it out, so syphoned the diesel out, into 3 20L drums. I didn't get around to pulling the tank that weekend, and it ended up sitting for almost 2 years, before I eventually got me finger out.

The leak ended up being seals (mainly the filler tube seal), I cleaned out a few minimal bits of dirt that were in the tank, then checked it fully inside for any signs of crud or fungus, but it was clean. Fitted the new seals, and refitted the tank, then got a big white tradey bucket and poured the fuel in out of the drums. The first two drums were full to the brim, and were clean as a whistle with no sedimentation in the bottom. I put them into the fuel tank and checked out the 3rd half full drum, which had some grey sludge in the bottom, which I suspect was fuel bug, so I chucked it around the chooks pen posts.

When driving, there was absolutely no noticeable difference between the fresh fuel in the main tank, and the almost two year old fuel in the sub, and that was alternating between the two for about 100km at a time.
4.2L TD Toyota Troopy, (Clarke's Country Camper Trailer, softfloor.) sold it and bought a Avan Ray small poptop caravan. I miss being able to acces the little tracks off into the scrub.

Yes diesel bug is a problem and I do treat accordingly. 1,100 litres I can burn in less than a week in the Cat D5B when I'm working it. If the price is still down next week I'll pick up another 1,100 litres.
