Realistically what can you do with the 5 minutes you saved?  Especially when it takes you 10 minutes to relax to the same level the slower person is already at.

I totally agree BMW man. I used to drive truck interstate and then country Vic into Melbourne every day. I learnt very quickly if I wacked on some good music and cruised along enjoying the drive, I would get to my destination pretty well the same time as if I busted my arse and pissed off everyone else on the road. Way less stressful too. The thing about trucks is, they are way more visible on the road so if you do something wrong, it stands out, e.g you could have 20 cars speeding in a certain area, but if a truck speeds in that same area, that is what people focus on. As far as keeping a safe braking distance, well that is damn near impossible. If you can fit another car between you and the one in front, they'll do it. And you can't tell me to just slow down and open the gap because another car will jump in. I tell you people, when you see a car move into your lane at 80-100kph in front of a 65 tonne b-double and you can see a baby seat in the back....well, it puts your heart in your mouth. I used to see that and alot of very bad behavior every single day. From cars and trucks. Personaly, I just cannot see the point of risking your life or anyone else's for the sake of a minute or two.
While I'm on it, speed cameras....revenue raisers? Hell yes. But it is your choice if you want to hand over your hard earned to the buggers. Don't blame the system for your bad choices.
Sorry guys, bad drivers, pet hate of mine. I'm happy now I got that of my chest.

What happen to being vigilant and watching the road in front you?
Problem is, leave a gap and it is an open invitation to overtake.

Problem is cars standing on the brakes as much as possible terrified of getting a ticket for "not doing 40 past scene" -  and the pan/tipper/B double (or the new waste trucks with 2x 40's and a dolly) @50 ton behind him having **** all chance of stopping - then you end up with a pinball machine of cars spearing off in every direction into each other - which has happened..

the other one is people struggle with what to do when an emergency vehicle is coming behind them with bells and whistles on them...

NETT time lost by using the second option was under 5 minutes. They said basically, if your can’t afford To lose 5 minutes in an hour of travelling, you should reconsider riding until time is not so critical  ;D ;D

And yet the Oxley "Highway" between Walcha and Wauchope has a speed limit of 110km/h in sections... with no shoulder... and no divider, whilst the New England Highway has a limit of 100....

Makes no sense at all....

NETT time lost by using the second option was under 5 minutes.

I saw this exact same scenario shown on TV many years ago, with Peter Wherret on Torque (that's how long ago! :'()

He started with filling up from a servo on Parramatta Rd at 8am Monday morning & drove to another servo 5k further along, driving sanely & sensibly, then topped up again.

Did exactly the same route, at the same time, the following Monday, but drove like a lunatic.

The difference was 17 seconds for the 5k, with, as they put it, "a significant increase in fuel consumption" ::)

Quote
about 90km ... was under 5 minutes.

&, by my maths, 17 sec for 5k = 306 seconds (or 5 min 6 sec) for 90k! ;D

Hi,
It may have been Peter also.
Two near identical vehicles, new brake shoes (years ago), new tyres, all weighed before fitting.
Melbourne to Sydney, one as fast as legally possible using every opportunity to legally overtake, the other to drive at traffic speed and only overtake when it would be silly not to.
Fuel consumption, tyre wear, and brake wear were considerably different. Time difference was less than 10%.
Cheers

As I've got a bit older I'm more than happy to just keep up with the traffic flow.
Have decided that I'm going to have exactly the same amount of beers, doesn't matter what time I get home.
Much less stressful in Sydney traffic.

Best thing I ever did was a defensive driving coarse about 40 yrs ago. It basically taught me to constantly be aware of my surroundings and to look for escape routes in case something does happen. I have never forgotten that and it has got me out of a potentially bad situation on more than one occasion. I think everybody should do one as a condition of gaining their licence.

If you drive at 100 kph you gain a whole 6 minutes travel time in each hour over traveling at 90 kph and use nearly 10% more fuel, is it really worth it ?

If you drive at 100kph in a 100kph zone you gain a whole lot of respect from other road users that need to be on the highway as part of their jobs.
Is it really worth driving so slowing and pissing off everyone else to save $1 worth of fuel? :P

I agree.  I prefer to sit on 100kph...except in the wet.  I,m only travelling for a holiday.  Many rely on travel to pay the bills. Time is money and I respect their need to meet timelines.  By all means travel slower but have the decency to pull over and let others pass.
