I'm not a super big fan of 79s as offroaders, but this one is definitely an exception. Mainly due to the full coil conversion, but I have to admit I got a little excited when he changed to second mid-snatch.

I'm expecting to see a lot of these getting around with dual snorkels in the near future too.

I also looked into those maxtrax xtreme, I think they called them "maxtrax pro" in the vid, but there's nothing on the maxtrax site or anything I could find except for a vid and article from some show in the USA. Can't imagine why they would release them in the USA and not here. https://www.exploringelements.com/new-maxtrax-xtreme-mini-jax-base/

remapping the 70's makes a massive differance to them...i doubled my HP with the remap and the thing pulls through all the gears now, where as previously it was mainly 3rd gear only that it really used to keep on pulling in. Towing my camper up big hills, my mate in his remapped 200 series towing his trailer struggles to stay with me...another mate said the same about his remapped 200 struggling to stay with his business partners remapped 70 series up a big range, they are a different beast once remapped. I should mention though that off the line and in other places my 70 isn’t in the same paddock as that 200, but climbing over big hills whilst towing a load it shines big time.

The main reason I don't love them as offroaders is from what I've seen they have almost no flex, and a woeful turning circle. They do have plenty of power and they're certainly tough, not to mention pretty gigantic, which I think makes them a great tourer or workhorse.
Which is fine for tons of people. Everything's a compromise, you just gotta decide what's important to you.
For example, I have a GU patrol, which has tons of flex, nice tight turning circle, plenty of offroad credibility, but going up a hill towing a trailer isn't going to keep up with a kid on a bmx.

yep, i don't disagree at all with any of that......my old 105 series Cruiser was a much better vehicle to drive for proper offroad driving with it's flex, but if you can get used to big tyre lifting instead of flexing through holes, they go ok off-road...just need lockers used a lot more. I'm over that type of wheeling these days and more prefer touring type travel anyhow and use mine for work daily, which is why my 79 suits us, but I tell everyone that thinks they want one themself that they aren't perfect and have plenty of faults.

If I'm being honest, I don't do as much of that type of driving as I'd like to, but I'd still like to.

Why does it have to be a 79? I'd reckon any of the dual cab utes with a 3.5 ton towing cap would be similarly capable, especially when you consider all the bolt-ons you can get and still spend less than buying a 79. My old man has been dragging a 25 foot silverline around the countryside with a colorado for over 3 years now and he's very happy with it.

Shall we run a sweep stake guessing how much the 79 build would cost one of us all up. Has to be near $150,000 on the road for sure.
900 plus nm of torque....... that should cover it.

Not sure how we'd ever settle it, but my guess is $180k.

The last episode was interesting. When we managed the store at Peppimenarti we used to go to those flood plains and fish the moyle river quite often. I knew the elders they went on the trip with them and yes did see the wreck but took no pics.
