Car things going the way of the dinosaurs
« on: September 26, 2018, 09:36:47 AM »
Apart from the nut behind the wheel they're working on removing I'm not so sure about digital speedos for analogues having had one in a Toyota Echo-

Be nice if they came up with a better more robust standard for the ubiquitous cig lighter socket like the move to standardised USB mobile phone charging but then we all have a lot invested in cig plugs already. The cig socket can be a PITA off the bitumen so should they agree to switch to Merrit plugs.

"Having a button instead of a lever frees up more space and it's safer in a side-on collision (nobody wants a handbrake in the leg)."

WTF? do people drive around with the handbrake on? everyone I know when released is down level with the console.. what they getting rid of that too?? I didnt bother reading past that one...
The world truly is getting dumber.

Perhaps they should have mentioned the 3L+ engine, the 5 speed auto, single turbo or diesels altogether?

Fingers crossed nobody ever writes off my 2015 LS Challenger as the last of the dinosaurs or I'm stuffed. If you're gunna do that you may as well take me with it

The Caddy has a vacuum operated park brake release..
As soon as you select drive or reverse, it releases automatically.

Pretty cool for 1964.

That's fine until you have a dead battery. My sister's captiva battery died while she was nose in to her garage and we couldn't get it to disengage. Fortunately I have 6m jumper cables among other options, but others might have been SOL.

CD players. I'm surprised how many new cars no longer have a CD player anymore.

What about the things you don't miss. Like drum brakes and vacuum wipers. Nope. Don't miss them at all.

Mrs and I are so backward that we only have one mobile between us, and it's not even a smart phone. So I am a x3.

Me too, I detest this rabid push of talking phones and devices that respond to spoken commands.

Ah the good old days of tapes.
Spending an hour getting a chewed up tape out of the cassette deck.

Cheers Glen

Followed by years of listening to that stretched and contorted bit of tape that had to be right in the middle of your favorite song...

I am not smart enough for a smart phone . A Telstra cheapie with buttons does every thing I want a phone to do - makes phone calls.

My missus is the same.  She uses a mobile Telstra gave me 15 years ago when I worked for them.. Only turns it on when she wants to make a call.  Recently she lost left it at a Woolworths counter. Someone found it and as they said to the cashier...I have no idea how this thing works!!!  The more you let technology suck you in the more you lose you independence and very soon instead of talking...you,ll just be baaaing like the other sheep that have their mobiles super glued to their hands.
